JOHN MONTECALVO KEEPS THE BALL ROLLING WITH ROCKINGHAM VICTORY

ROCKINGHAM, NC – John Montecalvo loved winning in Rockingham Dragway last fall so much – he decided to do it again in the spring.

Montecalvo left no stone unturned on Sunday as he defeated all takers to capture not only the IHRA Spring Nationals Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com crown, but the championship points lead as well.

It’s all about location, Montecalvo, a Long Island asphalt company owner says.

“We love this track,” Montecalvo said. “You can’t beat the fans, facilities, or the hospitality, and obviously we’re pretty successful here too. I wish the fall race was tomorrow. Actually, let me clarify, I wish the points situation was the same and the fall race was tomorrow,” the Center Moriches, NY native said.

Montecalvo’s Sonny Leonard-powered, RJ Race Cars-built Chevrolet Cobalt started from the unenviable #9 spot but used the precarious position as a springboard to continue his momentum-filled roll. His seeding ensured his first round opponent was the top qualifier through the IHRA’s inverted bracket of pairing opponents.

Not only did Montecalvo stop Rob Mansfield with a (6.361), he also scored decisive victories over a no-show Doug Kirk, then point leader Robert Patrick (6.391) and defending World Champion Pete Berner (6.388).

Montecalvo holds a six-point lead over Robert Patrick in the exceptionally competitive Torco’s CompetitionPlus Pro Stock division.

Montecalvo echoed the same sentiments as many other drivers throughout the weekend: that Torco’s CompetitionPlus Pro Stock is on another level this season. It bodes well for him that he’s atop the point standings.

“I think IHRA Pro Stock is the strongest it’s ever been,” said Montecalvo. “It’s gonna be a tough year, and hard battle, but that’s why we do it. We love it.”
