BERNER DRIVES GTO TO RUNNER-UP IN ROCKINGHAM

ROCKINGHAM, NC. – A runner-up at the IHRA Spring Nationals in Rockingham, NC., provided a better title defense effort for defending Torco’s CompetitionPlus Pro Stock champion Pete Berner.

Berner, a mechanical engineer from Crete, Ill., erased the memories of a frustrating season-opener in San Antonio, Texas, by reaching the final round against John Montecalvo.

“This is certainly a good direction to be headed in,” Berner said. “It’s just a culmination of a team effort and having a great combination. Jon Kaase keeps cranking out the horsepower and that works perfectly with this Rick Jones chassis. I think this weekend’s success is just the beginning of good things for us.

“We are optimistic things are headed in the right direction.”

Berner qualified sixth with a 6.359, 219.47. His march to the final round included victories over John Bartunek, Steve Spiess and Bob Bertsch.

Berner entered the event ranked eighth in the Torco’s CompetitionPlus Pro Stock point standings but made the leap to the third position, just 68 points from first.
