They get it all in So Calif, from Ex Firefighters, to the homeless trying to stay warm. I dont know the percentage, but it seems like once they get an arson fire going, a few more spring up. Im not seeing much new news, I jsut got home and had no idea there was more than the Sylmar fire going on. I hope the news is good news today, they need it

Question: Does anyone know how these fires start? Is it arson? Careless smokers tossing butts out of car windows? Lightning? Does anyone ever get arrested and charged? Back here we never seem to get the cause.

It doesn't take much to get a fire going during a Santa Ana wind condition. The hillsides are already covered with dry vegetation and the hot dry winds lower the humidity to a point that supports combustion with very little ignition source. Once a small fire gets going, the winds fan the flames and spread them in short order. It can be something as small as a tossed cigarette, a spark from a small motor such as a chain saw or weed wacker, or electrical lines which arc in the winds. Arson is also a big factor in these fires sometimes.

In the canyon areas the winds gust so fast they can bring down power wires which can start these fires as well as a cars hot exhaust.

All is well at JFR one structure close to the facility was burned however(furniture store). ;)

Mike, I heard it on the news last night. It wasnt Home DEpot, Thomas's or something like that. If I remember right it had been there for a while.
