Re: JFR is a sign of what is coming

Joe, nobody is forcing anyone to go or not go. Your failing to read and understand what is being written. All we are saying is that the business model for both NHRA national events and the pro classes must change and evolve or the pro portion and the current national event structure will fail. I don't really think any of us want that anymore than you do.

We will always have races at the local tracks so drag racing will survive in some form but NHRA, pro racers and "super track" operators are driving the price beyond the realm of the average fan and sportsman racer. I know you will not agree but you need to look around and see what's happening. Car counts are down over the last few years as well as fan counts. If that's not warning signs then I guess I'm wrong. As a matter of fact I HOPE I'm wrong...but I doubt it.

John, every comment thrown around in here from Car counts, to butts in the Seats, to low TV ratings have been beat to Death for 15 years! I really think some are pissed that NHRA continues to survive despite all their Rants. Remember 1984 when Top Fuel Dragster was considered a Dying class? 3 Natl. events had short fields, and it was determined that Don Garlits saved the class.

Re: JFR is a sign of what is coming

Post of the year candidate!

I wouldn't go that far. Just wanted to express my passion for drag racing for every decade. Whether people on this forum are tired of hearing about it or not, the early years of drag racing in ALL categories were magical years. No matter how quick and fast the fuel cars are now, that does not replace the rivalries, the showmanship, or even the look and sound of the nitro engined cars from the early years. They cackled more then. The sound was crisper and more staccato than the dull moan that current funny cars and top fuelers sound like during staging and right before the launch. Don't get me wrong about the unbelievable power increase they now have over years past. I attended the inaugural 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte and I was never more blown away than I was at that race when I experienced my first taste of 32,000 horsepower hitting the ground in unison. The sound and especially the vibration and force unleashed, especially from behind the cars and standing at the fence was incomprehensible. All I can say is that watching nitro funny cars and dragsters back in the "old days" was equally as fascinating and incomprehensible at that time. Everything is relative. Those cars were pushing the envelope just as much back then as current ones are today. I have not been to a nostalgia race as of yet so I can't comment on whether they seem slow and less exciting in comparison to Big Show NHRA cars now, but I'm sure I could enjoy them just for their more visual resemblance to the actual cars they supposedly represent. Sorry Joe, but I've always thought more highly of the Al Hoffman's and Whit Bazemore's as well as Johnny West's of drag racing than the corporate speaking drivers of current funny cars and dragsters that are incredibly fast moving billboards. Actually, by moving as quickly and fast as they do now, they aren't as good for sponsorship, especially with the shorter 1000 ft tracks. They are just as fast now at 1000 ft and they get to the finish line in 3/4 of a second less time. No wonder sponsors may not feel they are getting their money's worth and are bailing out. Wonder if NHRA ever considered that factor? I'm sure they have and they probably hear it all the time from sponsors. Anyway, 'nuff said on this topic. Thanks for listening.

PS: All the above being said, I still think highly of today's crop of drivers and I respect that they risk their lives every time they strap into these cars primarily to entertain us nut cases.

that's about as good a summation as anyone has typed on this subject.

I have noticed the Nostalgia forum in here gets very little traffic, strange after reading all these comments!

Simple... !969 MFG race @ OCIR, 1973 March Meet, the first "supernationals" @ OMS, "The Last Drag Race" @ Lions... and hundreds more... They are Not Nostalgia... they were all part of my life, a part of who I am today... just as real a Maple Grove this coming weekend...

No different than being IN the deliver room when k'dubs was born, and holding him less than a minute after...

I think nostalgia threads would get more attention if they and the rest were brought back into the main area. All of the sub-groups doesn't seem to help traffic.

I figured as much as NHRA gets trashed in here, and how Nostalgia racing is supposedly blowing up all of a sudden; one would think the Nostalgia Forum would get the most posts on this board!

Joe,
NHRA doesn't get "Trashed" any more today then it did 45 years ago and there were people that perfered to only run AHRA tracks.... most people I knew back then were members of both.

Mike Minick in the CTH is no different than if he was driving the Pitch car next year to me... they are both F/C... both burn nitro... but really, A Minick in a "Shoe" car? That's like the sun rising in the west lol

note; almost 5 AM... coming up on 48hrs:eek:
