Janis Exits in Round One at IHRA Season Opener

April 6, 2008 - MARION, Texas – Heading into the 2008 IHRA Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Season Mike Janis Racing was dealing with a lot of variables. A new car and new found horsepower topped the list but after some late off season testing the Janis team headed to the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals presented by NAPA Auto Parts and The San Antonio Express-News with confidence.

"Our testing numbers showed us some real promise," said crew chief Mike Janis Jr. " I'm sure there will be a learning period with the new car but I'm confident it will be a short one."

With only four 330 foot passes on their new Dan Page Race Cars chassis the reason for the younger Janis' confidence was evident on the team's first run past the 330. Driver and Team Owner Mike Janis posted a 3.988 at over 188 miles per hour, (This event is an 1/8 mile event) taking the provisional pole. Janis bettered his initial pass, with a 3.972 but was bumped to second by rival Scott Cannon. (The two split the weekends "Last Man Standing" bonus points.)

In round one action Janis was paired with former Kentucky Gubernatorial candidate Billy Harper. Harper, the Paducah, KY resident qualified his 2000 Dodge Viper in the number 10 spot with a 4.079 at just under 174 miles per hour. Janis cut the better light and was out in front until he rattled the tires just past the 60-foot mark. Janis peddled and recovered but it was to late as Harper posted his best time of the weekend a 4.046 at 176.95 miles per hour taking the win over Janis' 4.11 at 183.87.

"We didn't realize the track was so tight," said Janis. "We made the wrong call. What are you going to do? That's racing. We'll be out testing again soon and be ready for Rockingham.
