The Brett Stevens Racing super team began their 2006/2007 Australian Drag Racing Championship campaign in style with a 1-2 result for their Jack Daniel’s Racing Nitro Harley Top Bikes at the East Coast Nationals in Sydney over the weekend.
Brett ‘The Boss’ Stevens took the win from team mate Troy McLean after an unstoppable run through the elimination rounds where he reeled off consecutive mid 6-seconds passes at over 340 kph through the Finals.
Competing in three professional brackets at the event, Stevens also managed to qualify his Kitten Car Care Products Funny Car and Jack Daniel’s Racing Ford Falcon Doorslammer in the tight Top Alcohol and Top Doorslammer fields respectively.
He was eliminated in the Top Alcohol quarter-finals after leaving early on the start line, giving him one of only a couple of red lights he has ever had in his 17 year professional Drag Racing career to date.
He also went out in the Top Doorslammer quarter-final to eventual event winner John Zappia after getting out in front early before over-powering the track with his 3000 horsepower sedan.
“During qualifying in Top Bike both Troy ’s ( McLean ) and my bike had some electrical issues that meant we weren’t quite on the money straight away,” Stevens said.
“We still managed to get the number 2 and 4 spots though and this gave us the opportunity to get all the problems sorted out before the Finals where we really made our mark.”
“To begin the new season like this with a win and runner up in Top Bike is a fantastic result for the whole team and I can tell that I will be fighting with Troy all season for the Championship.”
In what was the second quickest Top Doorslammer field of all time, Brett Stevens Racing crew chief and driver of the teams SP Racing Falcon, Steve Packman, also went on to make the semis of the ‘B’ finals and is confident of even bigger and better things come the Australian Nationals in two weeks time.
“These Falcon Doorslammers are making so much more power we are struggling to get it all to the track, but this weekend we were testing a few new setups and gained some valuable data that I think will see us improve our times even further,” Packman said.
“Our 60 foot times were some of the quickest of the event in the bracket and we know we have the top end speed to come home strong.”
“Now we just have to put our new combinations together and I think we will be a real force at Willowbank for the Nationals.”
In Pro Stock Bike, the Brett Stevens Racing prepared S&S Powered Pro Stock Buell suffered its first ever defeat in Australia with team unable to blow out the off season cobwebs and find the ideal tune up for the conditions.
New rider Pete Cochrane battled hard with the bike all weekend, but went out in the quarter-finals of the bracket.
The entire Brett Stevens Racing team will next be on track at the Australian Drag Racing Nationals at Willowbank Raceway , Queensland from the 14th-16th September.
