KITCHENER, ONTARIO (October 29, 2008) – Although the J&J Roth Racing Team has been competing on the drag strip for many years, 2008 was the first season for the Kitchener-based team in the Pro Modified Racing Association.
And for the team’s rookie year, finishing fourth in Wix Filtration Products, Valvoline, Uni-Select, and Moen Incorporated as sponsors of the 2008 PMRA Championship Point Award Series has been a highlight of the team’s career.
“We were happy with how we ended up,” said team driver Jeff Roth, who drove the 1957 Chevy Pro Modified. “We had some issues with our first year, but we were rookies in the series, and we got things figured out.”
While the team did not win any of the events of the 2008 tour, it did compete at all six races. Jeff said that one of their biggest concerns in setting up the car had to do with tire shake, but he felt that had been addressed later in the season.
“We learned a lot this year,” said Jeff’s father Jim, owner of the supercharged Alan Johnson 526-cubic inch Atchison-powered Chevy. “We made some mistakes but it was an experimental year for us.”
The team has been involved in racing for about 15 years, since Jeff got out of a kart and into a Junior Dragster. Now 26, Jeff has driven a Super Pro car, and Altered Fiat, and a Funny Car before getting behind the wheel of his yellow door-slammer in 2008.
For 2009, the Roths plan to expand into a two-car team. The elder Roth said the new car is on order, and should be able to supply more information in the next couple of months.
“We’re looking forward to next year,” said Jeff. “The PMRA is a great series. The teams are great to deal with, everyone helps each other out, and the fans have been enthusiastic wherever we went.”

The Roths will be honored at the upcoming PMRA Champions Banquet on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at The Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel in the Oak Room in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Receiving top honors November 15 will be Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario. Driving his B&B Racing 1963 Corvette, Boland won the 2008 PMRA Point Award Championship sponsored by Wix Filtration Products, Valvoline, Uni-Select, and Moen Incorporated. The championship is Boland’s second consecutive title.
Placing second in PMRA points was Terry Brown of Caledonia, Ontario, with his 1971 Dodge Challenger, and third was Joe Boniferro of Niagara Falls, Ontario, with his 1999 Dodge Avenger. Jeff Roth of Kitchener, Ontario placed fourth with his 1957 Chevy.
For 2008, its fourth year of competition, a record number of Pro Modified teams competed in the PMRA at six events in Ontario, Quebec, and New York State.
