KITCHENER, ONTARIO (February 11, 2009) – After a season learning how to get a Pro Modified race car down the track, J&J Roth Racing has spent the off-season getting prepared to do battle for the upcoming Pro Modified Racing Association season.
“We’re looking forward to this year,” said team owner Jim Roth recently. “”Everything is pretty well set.”
Driving the bright yellow 1957 Chevy-bodied Pro Modified to a fourth-place points finish in their first year of PMRA competition in 2008, the team will debut a new car for 2009. The team has also acquired a lot of knowledge since its first season.
“We’re happy with how we ended up,” said driver Jeff Roth, son of Jim, and a former Junior Dragster racer who drove a Funny Car before getting behind the wheel of a Pro Modified. “Sure, we were rookies, and we had some issues. But we’ve got our tire-shake problems figured out, and we’re looking forward to this year.”
The elder Roth concurred with his son about the 2008 season. “We were on a learning curve, but we think we’ll be good this year. We had lots of horsepower last season, just had problems getting it on the track.”
And a whole new car has been in the works for months now, and should make its appearance shortly after getting painted. A 1941 Willys body will be sitting on top of a new Lowdown Hot Rods chassis. An Atchison Racing 526-cubic inch supercharged engine will sit between the frame rails, with a PSI screw blower, and fuel management system supplied by Carl Spiering and ERD (Engine Research and Development).
“The guys at Lowdown Hot Rods have done a fantastic job,” said Jim Roth. “The communication with them has been second to none. We have been working with first-class Canadian companies.”
“The car is just about ready for paint,” he continued. “It’s a totally new paint scheme, and will be fairly wild.”
The PMRA will compete at several drag strips in 2009, including dates at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17, at St. Thomas Dragway on July 11 and 12, and a season-closer at the Southwestern Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex on September 5 and 6.
Negotiations are underway way with several US race tracks based in Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as Quebec with the plan of presenting a six or seven event PMRA drag racing series for 2009.
