It Was ____ Years Ago That….. (75th Anniversary of NHRA) (2 Viewers)

It’s the “let’s remind everyone how old we are” thread. Here are some other facts and figures that will make you question the passing of time:
-Ron Capps is older than Don Prudhomme was when he retired in 1994.
-The March Meet has been a nostalgia race longer than it was a big show race
-More years have passed between now and Kenny Bernstein’s first 300mph pass than that run and The Greek’s first 200 MPH run.
-If Lions Dragstrip were to close today, it would’ve opened in 2009.
-If OCIR were to close today it would’ve opened in 2011.
-Maddi Gordon never saw Shirley Muldowney race in person
-Jeb Allen is the youngest Top Fuel winner at 18 years old, imagine a driver born in 2008 winning in Top Fuel today.

Ryan: These are all very good points, in my opinion. It can be quite interesting to put things in perspective, like you have done.

We don't often reflect on how short the time period was that these famous old drag strips operated. And, how very young our vintage drag racing heros were when they started racing in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Most were in their late teen and early 20's.

Another one I like to think about is that Don Garlits was called the "Old Man" when he was just in his early 30's. When he had his bad accident at Lions in 1970, he was around 38 years old. Yes, "old" by the standards of those times, but very young by today's drag racing standards when many drivers are in the 60's and are very competitive at that age.

i'll second that on E-Town. Lets not forget Atco, Cecil, and the Grove, all within a 2 hour drive of each other.Bobs Berserko Lounge decals on the GSP toll booths, chants of "the other side sucks" , and show us your "T-Ts" at the Summernationals. Bring back the Race Queens, long smoky burnouts, and dry hops. Glory Days without a doubt.

It was 48 years ago that Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen beat Don “The Snake” Prudhomme at the U.S. Nationals
