Man they sure get there earlystarted parking rigs yesterday morning. continuing to fill. 8am wednesday it starts. it's big go week
That must be a long time ago. I have been going around 20 years and have never seen pro qualifying on ThursdayBefore becoming a competitor ,as a spectator in the eighties, for me the day to go was Thursday.Seven dollars to get in,no reserved seating (hardly any spectators that day anyway) all day runs in every class including the Alcohol classes,Pro Stock,Nitro Funny Car and Top Fuel. Could'nt be beat, and the .90 classes had no throttle delay crap.
Seemed all the Pros ran that first Thursday qualifier.
And they teargassed them and it drifted into the pitsSpeaking of way back when, remember Raceway Road out front of IRP ? At least a half mile,on either side, including the Drive In Theatre directly across from the main entrance,as a four day 24 hour party/campsite/girls/bikes/bikers/hot cars and everything in between. The Indiana National Guard was called out one year to quell the rowdiness.
I wish you could have sprung for the weekend pass on NHRA.TV Mike.eagerly waiting for 1st rnd stk Q on DRC! ..... weather is great, i think 100+ cars could be -1.000+ under.
When I was with Jim Dunn, after the Brainerd race if I didn't need to go to Sioux City to get any repairs done on the hauler, I would stop off at the Kalahari resort in Wisconsin Dells for a couple days and then head on to Brownsburg. There is always a lot of different types of racing that goes on around Indy that time of the year. The weekend before the US Nationals there are a lot of us crew guys from different teams would go watch the Ironman supercross race at Crawfordsville IN. Then after the US Nationals race, I would stay there for another week and watch sprint car races at Kokomo IN and the NASCAR race at IMS. Then I would head over to Maple Grove for our NHRA race, and then head back to Indy to hangout for another week and go to some more sprint car races before heading to St Louis for our NHRA race. I would race my slotcars in Indy on Thursday nights also. After St Louis I would head back to the shop in California to reload for the Charlotte race.Man they sure get there early
Do they still let them (Stock, Super Stock, Comp) run all out at Indy without class index penalties? I felt like they let them a few years ago but don't know if they still do or ever did.eagerly waiting for 1st rnd stk Q on DRC! ..... weather is great, i think 100+ cars could be -1.000+ under.
Sounds like 25th street/Georgetown outside IMS on 500 weekend. You will see about every kind of person/activity/vehicle you can imagine on the night before the 500. The cops pretty much just stand by and try to be prepared in case an actual immediate threat to life or limb comes up.Speaking of way back when, remember Raceway Road out front of IRP ? almost certain they still do. remember seeing something posted on nhraracer.com not too long agoDo they still let them (Stock, Super Stock, Comp) run all out at Indy without class index penalties? I felt like they let them a few years ago but don't know if they still do or ever did.
I miss all of my friends that I was around every week in racing and the traveling part of it. I don’t miss the feeling you have standing on the starting line waiting to see if the car and driver comes back to the pit safe and in one piece. I have seen a few cars come back to the pit without the body on but thank God the drivers were not injured and it wasn’t from anything I worked on. Bode and Dunn’s invite me to Pomona or Vegas every year but I usually have a Slotcar race scheduled on those weekends. The only race shop I have even been in since I retired was Bo Butners earlier this year when I went there to compete in the 1/24th scale million dollar stotcar race.Do you miss the road Eugene?
