How To Really Slow The Nitro Classes Down

Truck pulls from that era to me are equivalent to the NHRA of the 60's for the old timers on here - if that makes any sense. I saw Dan Patrick's red Coors funnycar pull the sled in Pittsburgh - for whatever reason that car was 10x louder then all the other pullers that night, including the multiple engine tractors. I contacted him randomly once on the internet, and he explained why it was so loud, unfortunately I forgot what he said. But the still photo my dad took of the pull was funny, the reaction of the folks lining the track, one guy ears plugged with his fingers falling back on one foot getting blown away from the noise.

were they running Nitro in those where most tractors run alcohol?

I remember the F/C pullers back in the day, My thought on them being louder for sure, How about more blower overdrive?

I remember as a kid going to the Spectrum in Philly indoor arena and seeing the USHRA when they came around with their tour.
Imagine if they ran Nitro in their car or truck in an Indoor venue? Some people can't breathe when they warm a fuel car up in the pits at a Nat. event and hell that's outdoors!
I would see a few people spectating during a warm up with gas masks on and would tap them on the shoulder and say, You must be a NASCAR fan. :D

No matter what you do some will complain. Also I have full confidence in our crew chiefs to continue to improve. So, if you truly want to slow them down, then just pick an ET for each class. Problem solved. Example: 4.00 TF & 4:50 FC
OR go back to full 1/4 - with slower ET's say 4.75 TF & 5.00 FC. No guessing smaller pumps, or single mag, or less blower, or less percentage nitro, or add weight , etc. Etc.
Set yer min ET & let the crew chiefs figure it out.

So super class racing on fuel? Never going to happen, and it shouldn't. But, I don't think this thread was truly meant to be another "how to slow down the nitro classes" discussion.

Never say never. The AA/FA are kept to a 6.00 index at the March Meet and CHRR.

The reason being is all the safety upgrades required like carbon fiber brakes on all corners and the layhee device thingy to go under that threshold.

I still say this is the true way to slow them down AND add excitement

the Aussies really know how to do it....shorten the fuse!

gets a little expensive, but you can go back to 1320 feet with no problems....

TF in the rain, only in Australia.
I suggested no prep and got bashed.

IMO at this point nitro can not go much faster.

I've seen the rain video Bob posted before and I think it's very useful in illustrating a point that the harder the cars are to drive, the more important a driver's role in the equation. I read a quote by Alan Johnson that the only thing a driver could do today was screw up a good tune up. Seriously. While even suggesting racing the in the rain is not even close to realistic, here's a "what if" thought: suppose NHRA quit gluing cars to the track until 660', and decrease wing size. That would effectively limit the launch, then with less downforce, there would be no more 330 mph top end speeds. Please don't trot out the old "the cars are so fast they need 6000lbs of downforce" argument either.

Only the Japanese would run a T/F in the rain :p....I have a lot of respect for the Aussies, they have some great racing down under

There used to be another video from Japan of a T/F doing a burnout in a crowded parking lot (!?!)....it looked worse than grudge night at these no prep tracks!
