Just got home from Commerce with a sunburn and exhausted from the heat. But still a good day cause I got to smell the nitro!

Neff is the latest DNQ in FC. This is exactly why there needs to be a 16 car field unlike some suggestions in another thread.

Look at all the FC DNQ's so far this year. It's mixing up the points and shows how importat all 4 Q runs are.

For me it is what sets NHRA apart..... NO PROVISIONALS. IF it's not 1 of the fastest 16 put it in the trailer and try again next week.

Just my opinion ;-)

I was going to post a "Mike Neff got screwed" thread. Isn't that what you do if they don't qualify?

What? Shoe came over, took Neffs car and crew and gave it to Beckman? Man, who gets screwed next week? Why don't they just cut that car up for scrap and build a new one?!?:D

Just like Beckman last week and Capps in Vegas, Neff will rebound and be just fine come the Countdown.

While I hate to see it happen to Neff, this is why I love funny cars. They are so fickle, so hard to run and demand so much finesse that every win is special. Just as was already posted, there's not some, sponsor-pleasing safety net "provisional" for guys who can't get it up to speed. You're either fast enough or you're not in drag racing, period.

Zippy has been looking a little tired lately in interviews- maybe the double duty and talk of Ashley's return next season is starting to wear the guy out....

(GIANT wink wink....)

Wasnt that long ago that Robert Hight missed the show and went on to win the championship... but quailifing is part of it.. you make it or you dont.... thats what i love about drag racing.. and why i quit realy paying too much attention to the CUP races...

don't think it's ever anyone's intention to not qualify; especially members
of larger teams such as JFR & DSR, but with Castrol's presence on two
cars (mike's and john's), i wonder if that team tests during actual races,
it's either mike's or john's car that is the test bed, AAA and Traxxas into
sunday show at all costs?????

Personally, I think NHRA should do away with the "Paul Smith Rule". Let's make drag racing interesting again...

Well, any of 'em. But I think it needs to be like "Let's Make a Deal". Do you take your qualifying spot, or what's behind door #2? Could be cash, could be a farm animal. Like I said, make it interesting.

If you were to change the alternate rule, make it something interesting. The driver who qualified gets to keep the points, the other is running for the money.. OR the driver who qualified gets the round money, so the alternate or potential "buy in" is racing for free... collecting points only. I don't think any of todays teams would sell their spot in the field, and it's been a while since I can remember anyone not being able to make the call to round 1. I do like the option though to keep 16 cars in play.

Using say.. Bob Bode as an example.. selling his spot for whatever the price maybe to a Neff, Hight, or Capps who have a potential to earn them an event winning pay check while sitting on the side lines would benefit greatly from it, but it's unlikely they would want to earn it in such a manner. Plus I would think that if you can't put 4 good runs together in qualifying, you're likely a round 1 loser anyways. You're not going to hit the magic setup overnight.

However it could also backfire if say.. Hight was running for a title with 2 races left, DNQ's and Force is low e.t. Force doesn't care about the round money so he parks it and is "broke." Hight takes his place and races "free" but earns enough points to make it count towards the title. I guess it's not a good idea and flawed that way. Let's say the qualifying driver gets all the points earned from the alternate (just like a nascar driver who starts the race gets whatever finish a relief driver scores for him) and the alternate is racing for the cash only. That would really eliminate championship teams being enticed to buy their way in knowing it won't help their cause. It would be a true alternate rule again.
