Helmets? Really?

Plain and simple, someone thinks they need them, why argue, they aren't making them wear them to be stylish. You don't need seat belts, you don't need roll cages, you don't need fire systems and you don't need helmets, until you "need" them. The safer the better.

Nick,

My thought is that it won't come to that. We (me GG the ESPN camera guys), don't approach the cars until they stop. And we get the driver to come to us, so we are not standing in the road when the next car comes in. The turn around crew are in the road, pushing cars, and wrapping up parachutes and often times are concentrating on what they are doing, not looking for another car coming around the corner. They are in the middle of the action, we are off to the side.

Glad you enjoyed the race!

Alan

Truth be told, these helmets have nothing to do with the race cars or the perils of working in that area. These helmets are to protect the top end crew from the ESPN2 camera and audio crews from running them over, knocking them down, pushing them out of the way.......to get to the JFR drivers.

And you noticed the helmets all colored white....... at the Gatornationals I expect we'll see the letters "Castrol GTX" to be on the side of them ?? :D

Now that's funny!

Looks like another bill board oppurtuity to me. More advertising revenue
Has everbody noticed the lack of major sponsor banners and signage along the guard rails???

Effective at the Winternationals the manufacures must pay a $6,500.00 yearly fee to have thier signs placed. Always part of the deal before. I think onlhy a couple agreed and now they have having second thoughts when the found they were alone out there. Also 4 vacant suites in the town at Pomona, which is not a good sign.

Thanks Alan. I appreciate the insight and perspective.

Preventing someone getting hurt is a bad idea... no reason to do that..:rolleyes:

Joe... i've seen fans that needed helmets away from the track.. so whats your point?....lol

On that stationary camera at the start... In my opinion I like it better then the super closeup shots of the wheels spinning, or the closeup window shot. I got to watch some of the race on a 6x10 projection hd tv and when the camera is stationary like that it makes you feel like your sitting right next to the track.

All good points gentlemen. :D

I won't change my opinion about how silly they look though. Maybe NHRA can get them painted? Honestly, the plain white helmet does not look professional...just looks silly....despite the protection it provides.

Maybe NHRA can sell advertising space on them.

The helmets are probably color coded so supervisors can figure out who's who at a glance. Traditionally, safety workers wear white.

In fact, when I work the corcers at Brainerd, my entire outfit, including pants and shirt is white.

My point if preventing Injury is the idea, shouldnt the Fans be forced to Wear Helmets? Afterall a Woman was killed at this very track 2 years ago!

If a track worker suffered a head injury at an NHRA event, the chronic complainers, second-guessers, and NHRA-bashers on the Mater would be the first ones to scream that the NHRA was negligent, stupid, and didn't care about the welfare of the workers.

In the interest of safety, perhaps Alan should be wearing a helmet and leathers when he does his jersey barrier walk before the finals on Sunday...hate to see him slip and fall... seriously though, preventative measures that could save someone from a serious injury aren't always a bad idea...
