I've always gotten a kick out the coyness with which he's handled the question over the years. Makes me wonder if Garlits' claim to know it really is the wrong date the Greek is having more fun with us.

I swear the guy hasn't aged in 20 years I don't think. And sure does get around well too.

Even if he is 93 the math doesn't work out for that. Korea is more likely. November 11 1928 - May 8 1945 would be short to be in the service. Still proud of him for his service no matter what era it was!

I think he said in an interview that he had some "trouble" and joining up in the Army in 1945 - probably not long before Germany surrendered - was the better option (I assume jail/prison was the other choice). He was pretty crafty in the explanation, just like he is when asked his age, and it cracks me up when he does that.
