JOLIET, Ill. – GT Tonglet was not able to notch a second consecutive upset victory over Hector Arana Jr. in Sunday’s opening round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals.
On a good note, the new, one-of-kind Nitro Fish/Tonglet Racing Suzuki GSXR was recognized by NHRA’s technical department as the Best Engineered vehicle. Team owner Gary Tonglet and GT built the all-aluminum motorcycle in the off-season. He has qualified in three consecutive races.
Arana ran the day’s quickest elapsed time – 6.977 seconds at 190.08 mph – and GT couldn’t keep up with his 7.157 at 183.97. Tonglet was the 16th starter and Arana was first, the same way it was at Norwalk.
The Tonglets discovered after pre-race driver introductions that there was a motor problem and they had to scramble to change it and get ready for the opening round.
They return to NHRA Full Throttle series competition in Denver, July 22-24.
