BRAINERD, Minn. – It took a few laps Friday to break in a new motor, but on Saturday, Greg Stanfield drove the Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP into the 12th starting position for Sunday’s Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
His quickest quarter-mile lap – 6.627 seconds at 207.91 mph – came on the last run and sent him into a first-round race against Kurt Johnson (No. 5, 6.609 at 208.23).
“Greg fixed our good motor and it was back in the car on Friday,” said crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia. “We needed a few laps and he made a good run. We did have a transmission problem on (Saturday’s) first run, but the motor got better and better.
“We have good data. Now we want to improve that for Sunday’s race.”
