CONCORD, N.C. – Greg Stanfield began his Countdown to the Championship playoffs Sunday with an upset victory over Allen Johnson in the first round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals at zMAX Dragway.
Stanfield hammered the throttle with a near-perfect .001-second reaction time to get the advantage and benefitted when the No. 2 qualifier’s car shook the tires. The Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks Pro Stock GXP was timed in 6.592 seconds at 209.39 mph. Johnson had a .020 reaction and slowed to a 14.132 at 61.39.
“It could’ve been a better day,” said team crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia. “It was good to get that first round win, and we found some things that will help us next week in Dallas. We also need to get more runs on our motor.”
Kurt Johnson ended Stanfield’s competitive day in the quarterfinals with a 6.579 at 209.82 to a 6.597 at 209.01.
The second of six Countdown races, the AAA Texas Fall Nationals, begins Friday at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
