Between Reifer riding on the back of John's moped and Larry telling Whit he had to get his head out of his ass,,,pretty fun stuff.

and seeing jerry the king ruth, and the old pics they had, and the two nostalgia cars doing side by side burnouts.

didnt' even mind missing the first hour of the tour de france ;)

P.S larry mean that HE had to get his head out of his ass, he was not telling whit to get whit's head out of his ass. Just don't want to start any trash talking you know :-)

Bpb....the adventures of the Force's is great stuff? Really.....more Nostalgia Funny Car coverage would have been way more interesting to me than Mike Neff's living quarters feng shui treatment by Force girls.

Thanks for the rec, Bob!

I think I'll watch the tape, instead of forgetting about it and taping over it!

I better feel thoroughly entertained after I watch it, Bob, or else I'm comiin' after yah!

While I thoroughly enjoyed bits like Jerry Ruth's commentary, having a running feature of Force's scooter travels and the decoration of Neff's trailer was an unfunny joke. NHRA/ESPN, you've got 44 other pro teams at your national events (60 when pro stock bike runs). Keeping in mind I have nothing personal against them, lose the Team Force over-saturation and cover the other teams for a change. Your broadcasts are becoming more bush league by the event.

im a huge force fan, but ill admit the scooter thing is insane! they wasted probably 15 minutes on showing how many miles he puts on his scooter. stop already, espn comtinues to dumb down the broadcasts. and as for saturation of showing force- where was all the saturation talk last year when all we saw and heard was tony $humacher. seriuosly force haters get a grip, but STOP showing the scooter and show more nostalgia funny cars that was cool!

how is it you can say the same thing as everyone else does but they are all force bashers and you are the voice of reason?

That was a great show last night!*

*except for the scooter and continued ESPN2/Force love affair.

I too am a huge John Force Racing fan as well (to the point where sometimes I just fast forward through everything else)

and I thought the bit on John's scooter was awesome

if you go to a race you will notice that the John Force team is the most popular team in NHRA... proved by the enormous crowds around their pit area.
and if you look around at all the fans.... most of them are wearing John Force apparel.

the reason for all of this is.... John Force is a marketing/business Genius.. he knows how to market himself, his family and the rest of his team.

the rest of the teams could learn a thing or two from him in that area

I wonder what will be next for ESPN? Maybe the life of the awning that's on a Force trailer. Or how about the history of the rubber mat surface the teams use under the race cars?

C'mon ESPN, drag racing offers lots of topics to cover. Give the viewing public something interesting. Educate them!

And tell Paul Page to drop the "with a (insert number)" that he adds to EVERY elapsed time. That phrase is only necessary when the times are identical and you need to go to the third digit to determine a winner. We need another drag racer in the booth with Mike...not Paul. Wonder if Garlits would like a part time job?

As far as the coverage goes, I've been scolded in the past for criticism and was informed that considering what the TV crew has to work with, we're all lucky we get any kind of halfway decent show at all!

So, I'll take it. It's worth sitting through the tepid stuff just for moments like Mike Dunn proudly displaying his Hannah Montana tattoo. I enjoy stuff like that.

And the guys I want to see covered are the Steve Chrisman's and Joe Hartleys and Lagana's and Haddock's and Downing's and Bode's. People like this are where the next John Force's could come from.

And good ole Force. He sucked when he started but never ever quit. Perseverance pays off. But it helps to be gifted with the best marketing talents in all of motorsports.

And one of the most satisfying things about Force marketing is to go into a Walmart and see boxes if Sanyo TV's with Ashley Force's picture on them.

And I also suspect the Force/Ford Motor relationship is helping to sell a lot more Fords! I suspect that the "Force bump" might be tangible to the Ford execs? With Force and Tasca it seems like a pretty cozy win-win deal between Ford Motor and NITRO DRAG RACING.

Some more show suggestions:

Pan over a typical race body and tell us more about some of the companies behind all those stickers. Like, how do I buy a "Herzog"? They can get their stickers on TV for 3 seconds, but what are those companies all about? I'd be happy to learn more about the offerings of any company stepping up and supporting drag racing! And it would be nice if these companies saw a tangible bump in their marketing if their car goes rounds or gets this type of exposure.

Deputize some fans for color commentary. I'd love to get in front of a camera and ask my hero's some questions "for the TV viewing audience".

I vote for Timmah Charlet (sp?) as a good candidate to get the ball rolling on this. He should be very very easy for the ESPN people to hunt down. crew guys interviewing other crew guys would also be good. Just brainstorming. If you want really good ideas, start paying me!

another peeve with Paul Page, who I think generally does a great job, is when he calls, say a .055 to .062 light a "holeshot". There will always be a slight differential when you can time stuff to the thousandths. It's really only a hole shot if the RT's are profoundly different or the guy with the slower ET beat the guy with a better one.

Another thing about Page is the rapport he and Mike have. It's nice to see two professional announcers that seem to have mutual respect and affection riffing off each other.

Mike Dunn can do whatever he wants because people respect him for his knowledge, his analytical skill, and his work ethic. I have so much admiration for the way he went out and learned about about Pro Stock. Plus anyone who rides 177 miles on a bike in one day can get any kind of tattoo that he wants. He and a bunch of his friends rode over 90 miles round trip just to visit his buddy Marty Nothstein at the points race at the Grove this past May.

No, Mike Dunn can do whatever he wants because he was a teenage Movie Star Teen Idol! And he had hair down to his shoulders.... and he had dual parachutes on his bicycle! Funny Car Summer is fantastic to watch, and it never ever gets old. The only sad thing about watching it is, knowing his present-day relationship with his Dad. Mike is a tremendous person. I wish they'd show more footage of his racing days on the telecasts to truly let the new fans learn about his life.

Bingo! I've seen the scooter in action enough already--I really didn't need a feature on the damn thing. And Kudos to Jeff D for recognizing that the Force overkill during the first hour of the broadcast was extremely unpalatable to ANYONE including some of the extreme Force fans for the most part. But Jeff, I hope you understand that just because I am not a fan of the Force clan, it does not make me a hater. I got extremely tired of the overkill on the Shoe coverage last year also, but I am not a DSR hater either, although--at least last year Shoe was winning...an Paul M. pointed out.

I do sincerely feel many teams (and viewers) are being cheated by wasting time on the incessant following of Force riding back and forth, back and forth on that scooter in search of a camera to follow him, etc.. Yes, I know he has 4 teams and two daughters in A/Fuel cars (how could we not--they are the only sportsman racers who ever get a shot of their cars on a mainline NHRA national event broadcast), but after witnessing first hand at several national events the Force trips back and forth, I can say for certain that every time he rode past the grand stands he was not always on the way to the other end to meet or greet a team member. I would have liked to see some time dedicated to the "independent" teams who are using increasingly small car counts to empty their piggybanks and take a shot at running with the big dogs...this situation is unique, or at least has not been seen for many years, and many of the "part-timers" have great stories to tell....maybe not as riveting as watching Courtney and Brittany decorate Neff's trailer, but interesting nevertheless, and the broadcast would be much richer if we could get off the Force team just long enough to explore some of the other racers out there.

On the other hand, the second hour of the broadcast was pure gold...Jerry Ruth visiting with ol' rival and friend Ed McCullough was priceless, and the inclusion of some Nostalgia cars was great. They CAN do a great job with a broadcast--they have the people, the equipment, and the resources. They just have to quit taking the easy way out and quit reporting how many times John Force scratched his butt between now and his last loss. If they can realize that John Force is a great talent, a great marketer, and a great legend in NHRA drag racing and is due his due, but is NOT the only story out there week after week, I think we could see a pretty good show on ESPN2. Just two cents worth from a non-JFR fan (but NOT a hater, ok???)

I'm as big a Force fan as there is, and I will be the first to tell you that Force is the NHRA and thats why he and his team get all the coverage. B/C its warranted and thats what the average fan who watches wants to see. However, I think the scooter deal coverage is beyond retarded.
