Great Finals Turnout Caps First Hurricane Alley Season

Louisiana's No Problem Raceway served up a big pot of perfect weather for the finals of Hurricane Alley's first racing season, and racers and fans responded to the sunshine in record numbers. Snowbirds Bruce and Debbie Sampson came all the way from Minnesota to enjoy the warmth of the Sportsman's Paradise state, signaling what should be a growing vacation trend amongst northern racers.

But most of the racers by far were from Texas and Louisiana, with the Pelicans taking five wins and six runner-ups to three wins and two runner-ups for the Longhorns. Entries tallied over 150, and spectators filled the stands and tailgated in pick-up trucks backed up alongside the track.

Naarden Quick 16
With Houma's Paul Miller tuning, Jimmy Randolph of nearby Theriot qualified #1 in Naarden Quick 16 on Jerriod Blanchard's Wheels Racing Top Gas Suzuki. At the end of the day, Randolph redlit to Jerry Pomila's JP Race Engines bike in the final. Jimmy took the season title, though, when David Richeaux had to sit out of eliminations. Richeaux's mount was in the shop and his replacement Harley-Davidson broke in qualifying. Randolph's runner-up finish was enough for him to tie Richeaux, with his #1 qualifier putting Jimmy over the top.

Vanson Leathers Pro ET
Paul Holman and Michael Mathews made for an all-Texas, all-'84 Suzuki Vanson Leathers Pro ET final. It was Mathews' second straight final round appearance in the class, and Holman's 10.98 dail-in gave Michael a full second to watch Holman's wheelie bars head towards the finishline. It also gave him plenty of time to see Paul's redlight, and Matthews was able to ease off the line for an easy win.

Dan Clark won the season championship on his REPSOL/Motorcycle Stuff/Dynamo Cycles'82 Suzuki GS1100. He bested Louisiana no-bar ET specialist Patrick Chabaud and his Naarden Kawasaki ZX14 for the title.

Dynamo Cycles Street ET
Dynamo Cycles Street ET showcased the largest field of the event. At the end of the day it was Ventress's Shaun Bizette with an .047 bulb and 8.977 on his 8.98 dial to take the double breakout win over Bobby David in an all-Kawasaki final.

Allen Singleton of Humble, Texas locked in the Dynamo Cycles Street ET points lead for the championship, and was also surprised to get the unannounced award as 2007-08 Racer Supporter. Allen was the one racer who attended every Hurricane Alley race during the 2007-08 season.

Brock's Performance Stock ET
The two highest dial-ins from round 1 of Brock's Performance Stock ET were matching
12.25s, and slow was the way to go as both these riders met in the final. Jeanerette's Lonnie
Guillotte chopped the tree on his SV650 and took the win when Covingon's Kenneth
Bickham broke out trying to catch Guillotte's 12.271.

Pro Street
Todd John came close with an 8.046, but only Jason Coffee had 7 second runs in the Pro Street exhibition class. Their performances led to a John vs. Coffee, Louisiana vs. Texas final, with both riders on turbo 'Busas. John took the tree, but Coffee took the stripe with an 8.107 to claim the win for Texas.

Super Street
San Antonio's Albert Lee took his second straight Hurricane Alley win, doing the deed this time in the Super Street exhibition class. Lee and final round opponent Jonathan Schexnider left the line within .002 of each other, but Albert's JP racing/Team APE GSXR1000 turbo outran Schexnider's 'Busa 8.451 to 8.603 for the lion's share of the $1500 purse.

Brock's Performance Super Bike
Opelousa's Kelly Christ took the Brock's Performance Super Bike win on his 'Busa. Christ caught a break when Houston's Paul Bob threw a rod while winning the semi. Christ, who clocked 8.745 at 156.99 in the semi, cruised unopposed in the final.

Brock's Performance Super Stock
The Brock's Performance Super Stock 9.50 index class showcased ZX12s and '14s, GSXRs and Hayabusas, but the final was all ZX10s. Metarie's Michael Mahne's ZX10 runs consistent 9.30s, so short shifting at the right points was his road to the Super Stock final. But Mahne had motor problems and had to coast to a 14.955, giving Ventress's Gary Sicard the win with a 9.713.

T'N'T Series
The Test 'N 'Tune class filled in the gaps of the class offerings, with 34 bikes making passes all day. Derrick Holloway lapped his 7.0 Pro Mod and young L.E. Tonglet broke in his Pro Stock Suzuki with dad Gary and brother G.T.

Houma's "Fast" Johnnie Boutwell's PCP racing led a group of five Outlaw Pro Street bikes to form their own class. But "Fast" Johnnie was slow at the tree in the final and gave a massive holeshot victory to Covington's Steve Brindle. Reaction times were .077 to .322 in favor of Brindle, while Boutwell's 7.502 at 189.26 mph outpaced Brindle's 7.691 at 169.40. It was a MiRock throwback, with Boutwell on the old Mac McAdams/Doug Witt Nightrider and Brindle on Robbie Hunnicutt's old Superman bike.

Two $100 payouts were made to the best T'N'T ET and reaction times, and trophies and over $200 in dealer-donated goodies were distributed to the top T'N'T racers. Big thanks to Dynamo Cycles, Cycle Goodies, REPSOL, Seminole Powersports and others for pitching in the prizes.
