The first NHRA National Event was held at Great Bend Kansas - 53 years ago today. Later it became the US Nationals.

That drag strip is still in operation-there's a Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Points race held there-here is it's website.

The pits and the strip are old runways. A live runway is just to the east of the track. I've actually flown into and out of the Great Bend airport. Take down a gate or two, and they are still connected.
