I have a newfound respect for Lance. He made some thoughtful, intelligent observations in that story. It also shows what a great bunch of people are involved in the sport.

That was a really good article. I'm happy for him that's he's stayed sober. :)

I must say a great article it was. I never knew that about Lance and I am happy things in his life are going in the directions he wants and needs them to go.

I have to admit in 1973 when I worked with him on Clive Skiltons Pegasus Top Fuel he wasn't that great to be around. I'm glad hes doing better now.

Thanks to Bobby and Lance for a story that allows the casual fan to see "backstage" of the individuals in our sport.

Lance is the person that I hired to teach Richard and I how to run a nitro car in the beginning, along with the sage advice of Joe Pisano. Lance did a good job for us but his addictions caused an early departure, but he has always remained a very good friend of our family. I didn't know how to help him, or if he even wanted help at that time.

One thing I would like to point out is that if you get high on drugs or alcohol tonight, it still affects your performance the next day. And I saw several drivers and crews in the old days that were under the influence while their car was on the track. There are a couple of teams today that are still struggling with performance consistency that haven't awakened to the fact that it is the partying/drinking/drug habits of their crewmembers.

Many teams have random drug testing for their crews now, and you can see the benefits to their team's performance and the quality of the personnel they have. I applaud NHRA's program and wish it was expanded to include more individuals.

Again, thanks Bobby and Lance.

I remember a few years ago Lance lost a ton of weight, I saw him in the Restroom in Vegas and he said he lost 100 Lbs! But like most of us, looks like he gained most of it back.

That was a really nice article. Had the pleasure of visiting with Lance one afternoon at Clay Millican's shop several years ago. Super nice guy. Glad to see someone conquer their addictions.

wow I had no idea that it was as bad as your hinting at, but i guess there only people too, not celebrity mechanics

I had the pleasure of having dinner with Lance both Friday and Saturday nights at Englishtown this year. Having never met him before in my life, I was truly impressed. He talked about his addiction and how much better life is now. One of the good guys in the pits.

Great story - Thank you Bobby for writing and Lance for sharing your story. I think this could serve as an inspiration to many.
