Was told this morning that Ted Cyr the former Top Eliminator driver from Escondido, Ca passed away yesterday. My condolences and heart goes out to his family.
Sad news. Just a quick story about a memorable moment involving Ted. Indy 1971 was the first big race that my brother and I attended. We thought we had died and gone to heaven. Monday it rained after the first round of Top Fuel had been almost completed, so we stuck around for eliminations on Tuesday. In those days the racers packed everything up and went back to the motel -- race cars and all. Monday evening we were walking around the Holiday Inn parking lot about midnight, watching crews work on their cars. Cyr and Schofield had been working on their Top Fuel car for several hours and apparently wanted to make sure everything was buttoned up correctly. TF cars were push started then, and Ted Cyr got in the push car with Flip in the TF car and Ted pushed him around the damn parking lot. They fired that thing up and let it run for a few minutes while Ted checked things out. It was just nuts and really cool. Sorry for the people that were trying to sleep. RIP Ted.
