GM and Pro Stock

ya know, I've been a GM guy all along. every brand new car or truck I have purchased has been GM. so have several leases and used. all total prbably 12. this is comared to 5 cars of various other brands that I purchased used. with that being said, I think GM spending $ on racing (even though I love it) is BS at this stage. how would it sound if I went bankrupt, signed up for welfare and food stamps and then bought race car?

Lame comparison.

First, racing is advertising, advertising is life blood to a car company. With all the companies talking about performance (new Mustangs, new Challenger, new Camaro, etc.) it makes sense to get into racing. And drag racing is a good buy from a media perspective (read: cheap).

Second, they're out of bankruptcy, are buying back the gov't shares, and are making money. They're "off welfare", they have a real job :)

Third, you and me racing is just pissing money away. A car company racing is advertising (see above), research and development, good PR, good way to entertain clients, and so on.

Finally, I'm at a loss to see how anyone (really, anyone) talking about doing more anything (hiring, spending, let alone racing) not less, in this economy is anything but a good thing.

Great news!!! :)

I do wonder what this'll mean for WJ & KJ.
Maybe GM Performance Parts for KJ?

Chris, good points. I understand all of what you're saying. Since you pointed it out though, I might get more excited when the PS class does have competitive (Mustangs, Challengers and Camaros) dominating the field.

Lots of people go through bankruptcy and then recover, people go on welfare and then rebuild their lives, people use food stamps to get through hard times. Lots of people came to America in search of a better life and a second chance. There may not be redemption in your world, but the United States that I know and love has always been a place where if people are willing to get up off their knees and dust themselves off, we will try to given them a second chance. Except of course in New York, where we tend to kick people when they are down!

I call BS on this. They just fired Mr. Goodwrench . So now they want
to get back into racing? WTF

Getting back into NHRA Pro Stock? Most of the cars compeating are GM. Well maybe getting back into sponsorship I guess. When will they start running cars that they still make? Pontiac is history. It's time NHRA stopped these phony body styles & made rules that they start running something based on what is being sold The Mustang is a good start, Camaro & Challenger bodies need to be phased in quickly.

And to think everyone is suprised at Ford's current success! Screw Obama Motors! As long as either GM or Chrysler have any ties to the Government, I won't buy their stupid cars!

Apparently you won't have long to wait in the case of GM-its profits for the third quarter were larger than Ford's and its IPO is next week!

Joe ... were you a GM guy before the auto bailout? Seems like you want to hold it against GM that the US Gov't gave them money. Should your beef not lie at the steps of the White House? GM did what they felt they needed to survive. The Gov't could have said no. Picture the USA with Ford as the only remaining original US Auto maker from its industrial roots.

The GM product hasn't changed. Pontiac is gone but that was in the works long before any of the bailout stuff. Once the IPO is executed (see attached link) and they pay off a chunk of the debt to become majority owners once again, GM will be a better business as a result of all this. You watch.

Hey Joe, to be consistent, you should stop filling up at the gas station, because the gasoline contains ethanol, which is subsidized by the government and you'd better stop eating anything that has wheat and or corn, because they get government subsidies as well and of course that means all beef is out, because cows eat corn, and forget about wearing anything made from cotton, because of the government subsidies there too!

I'm just saying Joe, there are a lot of producers that are in business only because of aid from the government and yes i would get rid of all of those subsidies-starting with all farm subsidies and all ethanol subsidies and yes the tax deductions for college tuition payments too. If subsidies are no good for farmers, they are not good for college tuition either-at least I'm consistent, which is more than I can say for all those farm state senators who advocate less government spending, but don't dare cut agricultural subsidies.

I expect and hope that GM is going to come out of the reorganization in a very strong position and can hopefully maintain and grow its position as one of the world's leading auto manufacturers.

There's actually a huge benefit to a reorganization of this nature, it gives you a one time chance to flush all your non-profitable activities and poor contracts and just hang on to the best components of your company.

If they did it right GM should come out from this in a very strong position.

I don't begrudge them having the opportunity to do this and even to be covering the risk from it out of my tax dollars. With all the advantages the Japanese auto companies were given by their government and even ours, I don't mind leveling the playing field some.

Come out of this reorganization...LOL....Bailout with Taxpayers money...

Cancel non-profitable contract.....UAW in charge now...LOL

It is very important to realize all the tax breaks that the Japanese companies got from state governments to build plants in their states. They got so many tax breaks, you'd think they were a sports team. I wonder how much the Colts paid for Lucas Oil Stadium and how much the taxpayers of Indiana paid for Lucas Oil Stadium!
