Gas station safety

I would like to see gas stations put up mirrors at the pumps so I can keep an eye on who is behind me. I must look like I'm doing some insane little dance, twirling around while I'll put gas in the car. We have had a number of abductions here lately. It has gotten to the point that I don't go out by myself, and I carry.
We wait for each other at work and walk in together and out together in the evening. We work in a supposedly safe area, but a woman was abducted from the grocery at the end of the block, during the day.

WE live in a rural area and some drunk gal got lost and left her car and came walking up our driveway which is about 200ft to the house while Barbara was outside with our dogs and started to bag on Barbara that it was her fault that she was lost. Oh Saint Bernard just went nuts. The Saint thought Barbara was in danger and nearly ripped a 6ft chain link fence down trying to get after her. The drunk got one look at the Saint trying to get over the fence and was gone. Our neighbor is the Chief of Police in Murrieta and Barbara called his wife and within seconds 2 of Murrieta's finest were cat our house. Never did find the drunk.

Aim for body mass. You can only shoot at someone to stop them from killing you. Wording and intentions are very important. Anyone serious about gun self-defense should check out Masaad Ayoob. He is as astute legally as they get, and he's on our side. As to shooting to stop a rape: The CDC has not listed a cure for HIV or hepatitis, so draw your own conclusion as to what you would do in that situation.

The gas station I usually go to is right across the street from my business. It's also a hang out for the local PD where their presence makes me fill safer when filling up. Unfortunately, this is also where we got to witness a police officer shooting an armed robber.

I put gas in whenever I get a chance so I'm not stuck in the situation of putting gas in at night. I try not to let it go below 1/2 a tank before filling up even if it means that I'm putting gas in every other day.

Whatever you can do to make yourself safer, I'm all for it. I don't have a lot of upper body stregnth so if somebody grabs my arms, I could be in serious trouble!

Virginia allows open carry, even in restaurants with an ABC license as long as the restaurant itself doesn't have a policy against it. I'm ambivalent about open carry. I will in very limited situations, like when I'm walking my pooches (55# and 80#) at the same time and don't want to mess with getting a shirt or jacket out of the way. Or when I worked as a service writer and the mechanics would all leave the shop at the same time for lunch and I was there by myself. The .45 was definately visible to anyone coming into the shop through the only unlocked door in the building.

After what I saw working the ER and knowing that two of my sisters homes have been broken in to, I just don't see the world the same way as I did 12 years ago. It's sad, but it has become the reality of life for us.
