Re: Funny car driver Melanie Troxel said she hopes the shorter course isn't permanent

James,

Thanks for the link and I'm with you. I'm not totally convinced that all of the drivers are for 1000' racing.

What I don't understand is that under the same conditions as they were with Scott's fatal crash, how would a 320' shorter race have helped him?

Perhaps the issue was brought up long before that happened but to use that incident as the basis for the argument doen't make much sense to me.

This seems to reflect what's reflected on the opinions of the move to a shorter track on this forum. You have some that are fer, and you have some that are agin. Just like here, opinions are all over the map.

What I find fascinating is that many people have so rigidly drawn lines in the sand without the first pair having made a pass. On the face of it, I am not for it as a permanent solution (but it is OK as a temporary deal) ... but I am not willing to make a complete determination without seeing something first.

I am not from Missouri ... but show me ...

It's all in people's opinions. One thing is for sure, it will put more of the driver into the equation, there will be more holeshot victories. If it included the Pro Stock class, drivers like WJ, Kurt and KB racing, that win alot of their races on the big end would probably be totally against it.

I agree. Although I call myself a traditionalist, I'm actually quite interested in seeing exactly how this will play out. It'll be interesting to see how the crew chiefs will handle this. Although Austin Coil has said he doesn't think anything will change, he's also well known for keeping things close to the vest with it comes to his game plan.

Time will tell.

Fire the first pair!!! Let's see how this plays out!!!

The car exploded at 1100'. So in the exact same situation? I'd say quite a bit.

How are you ever gonna' get 100% of everybody agreeing on everything?

Fat chance.

Bet ya' dollars ta' donuts most the drivers are for this.......for NOW.

Their ass is in the seat, not mine or yours.

I'd be willing to bet the entire farm, fire bootie on the other foot? The ones upset here would be singing another tune.

For now this is a quick, painless solution.

So for the rest of the year the fans are "cheated" out of less than one second per pass.

Small price.

If you change the Marathon in the Olympics to 22 miles , than its not a Marathon , its just a foot race. This weekend we will not see a Drag Race, just a 1000 ft run.

Re: Funny car driver Melanie Troxel said she hopes the shorter course isn't permanent

I'm still torn on it, but I'm willing to see what happens

Re: Funny car driver Melanie Troxel said she hopes the shorter course isn't permanent

We have to look at this as a temp measure. Either you like it or you don't which I think is pretty amazing since they haven't run yet. Why not wait and see????

Here I think is the best part about this. If this temp solution keeps them from not making some knee jerk reaction and stupid rule then it has served it's purpose. It is buying time to come to some sort of sensible solution to the problem.

Something else to consider is everybody talks about adding 320 feet to the shutdown and while this is true it also takes away 320 feet of accelleration.

I do have a question. If on the standard 1/4 the crew chiefs are accelerating their vehicle as hard as they will go then how can they run them harder now that it is 320 feet shorter?????? Some people have said this and I don't understand????

Rex,

I know you were there, and so that completely disqualifies anyone else who has an opinion that doesn't agree with you, but give your attitude a rest, bro.

The heart behind what Drew was saying is that 320' would not have a made a difference if the car blew up at 1000'. Many cars have blown up at 1000-1100' before and drivers have been totally fine.

This was brakes, parachutes, sandtrap, camera boom, and a concrete wall that all contributed to the terrible tragedy that has changed all of our lives.

The point that I have been making all along is that people will find a way to make these things faster with time. Drag racing is a science. Who can find the right combination to make things the fastest. If we stay at 1000' for five years, cars will blow up at 900 or 990'. And we will be back to the same issue.

If Scott's car would have exploded as he crossed the "new" finish line at 1000' (I know you said 1100', but just pretend and don't get your panties in a wad just yet...), would the extra 320' of stopping space have saved his life?

I seriously have my doubts.

Drew, I am with you bro!

Waiting for the "I was there and you weren't, so you don't freaking know what you're talking about" statement,

Jeremy

As I said before, it's better than nothing.

I'd rather see 'em race 1000' than have to pull another dead body out of a racecar.

Re: Funny car driver Melanie Troxel said she hopes the shorter course isn't permanent

There one thing about these discussions that irritates the crap out of me.

Everyone needs to quit telling us that we "won't notice a difference". I will notice a difference, and it will bother me. I don't like it at all.

That said, I understand why it was done, and I will wait patiently by until they make a final decision on what all needs to be done to keep people safe.

Some people don't seem to understand that I can think this is wrong, and the racing will be severely impacted and all sorts of other things like that, yet still support them for trying to keep the drivers safe.

Re: Funny car driver Melanie Troxel said she hopes the shorter course isn't permanent

Like Dixon, I'm old school and I too hope it's only temporary.

I've been following this sport on a regular basis since the mid sixties. I don't like the change and was a bit upset when I first learned about it. However, after mulling it over for a while, I understand why it was done and am accepting it.

It's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out later today, with the new distance and Denver's elevation and all. Are they still going to be allowed a higher nitro percentage? Anyone know?

Then Ashley Force is in trouble! :p
She gets left on quite frequently.

Rex,

I wasn't questioning anything regarding the safety issues. I was merely questioning the reasoning or the use of the argument in this particular case. The extra 320' in Scott's crash wouldn't have made any difference at all from what I saw but it's just my opinion based on just that.

The sandtrap/boom/wall/poles etc...all could have been another 320' down the track and I don't see how that would have changed anything. If there's proof otherwise please someone explain it.

That all being said, I fully understand the desire to slow them down or do something to eliminate the dangers and I was in no way questioning that. For the record...I'm neither for nor against 1000' racing. I agree that aside from the E.T.'s flashed up on the board that most won't really notice that much of a difference.

Jeremy, thanks for the support. :)
