CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 1, 2007) – Rod Fuller and his David Powers-owned MacAllister CAT team maintained its position in the qualifying order Sunday afternoon at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. The five-time NHRA Top Fuel winner used a qualifying-best 4.524-second elapsed time to finish sixth in the field.
Fuller, who has earned four poles this season, posted his best run on Friday evening. The Las Vegas resident used a Rob Flynn tune-up to sail to a run of 4.524 seconds at 325.85 mph to card the sixth quickest pass of the event. The current POWERade Top Fuel point-leader made five consistent passes in qualifying. On Sunday afternoon, the 1998 U.S. Nationals Super Gas runner-up clocked two solid 4.6-second passes on a hot O.R.P. quarter mile as the Caterpiller team worked on its race day setup for Monday. Fuller qualified fourth at Indy last year en route to a semifinal finish.
“We did well during qualifying,” Fuller said. “I’m happy with our results being sixth. We got down the track on every run. We had a problem on Saturday’s last qualifying run and broke a camshaft. That’s really rare and we would have qualified second or third with that run. We made two solid runs today and we have room for improvement. The goal is to sneak up on this thing and to go win this U.S. Nationals on Monday.”
Fuller will face off against No. 11 qualifier Doug Herbert when the first round of Top Fuel eliminations begins at 11 a.m. (ET) on Monday at O’Reilly Raceway Park. Fuller is 8-3 in his career versus Herbert.
