"Hot" Rod Fuller qualifies seventh at Pomona Finals

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2006) - Three-time NHRA winner "Hot" Rod Fuller raced his David Powers-owned Top Fuel dragster to the No. 7 qualifying position Saturday at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. He finished with a qualifying-best run of 4.509 seconds.

Fuller's 4.509-second pass came on his second qualifying effort of the weekend on Friday afternoon. On Saturday's first pass, the Valvoline dragster dropped a cylinder and slowed to a run of 4.780 seconds at 250.97 mph, and on his final qualifying attempt, the Las Vegas resident raced his Lee Beard-tuned rail to a consistent 4.534 at 324.20.

"We were going for it on the final run," Fuller said. "The early numbers were really good, but it just didn't hold. It wasn't a bad pass. Our car likes to perform on Sunday's and I like that."

Fuller will battle No. 10 qualifier Doug Herbert when Top Fuel eliminations begin at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday morning at the historic Southern California drag strip. Fuller is 4-2 in his career versus Herbert.
