First Round Bummer for Ellis

Even though the ET fell right in line with his qualifying passes, Chip Ellis's weekend of consistent performances ended abruptly in round 1 of the ProCare Rx Supernationals at Englishtown, New Jersey. A tardy reaction time, followed by a series of late shifts, meant that Ellis and the G2 crew were packing up the DRAG Specialties/S&S Buell early.

eliminations round 1
(W) Steve Johnson .026 7.013 at 190.14 mph
Chip Ellis .108 6.962 at 190.08 mph

"The guys gave me a badass bike and I just didn't do my job," said Ellis, whose G2 team won the Full Throttle Award for the third time in six races so far this year. "The bike would have run faster than 6.96, but I looked over in third gear to see where he (opponent Steve Johnson) was and over revved a couple of gears.

"The bike was running great all weekend. We made five runs within about a hundredth, and I was consistent all through qualifying. We were the last pair down the track in round 1 and I saw that nobody had redlighted, so I was relaxed. We were all good."

"We had our best 60 foot of the weekend that round, a 1.062," said George Smith, the G2 Motorsports president and crew chief on Ellis's DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell. "And we had our best 330. I feel good. I feel good about the motor, the numbers, and I feel good about the tuning decisions that we made. We gave Chip a really good, fast, competitive motorcycle. This class is so competitive, that the rider that can perform that first one and a half seconds and get away clean from the starting line, that's who's gonna win."

The second round proved Smith's theory, as Angelle Sampey threw away the round's only 6 second pass with a redlight. "That was your round," a bystander said to Ellis.

"So was the first one," said Chip.

"I wanted a second round real bad to see if we could have made the right tine-up call with the hotter conditions," said Smith.

"We got the Full Throttle award, and I'm glad to see the DRAG Specialties/ S&S powered Buell back qualifying near the front where they should be as the G2 flagship," said George Bryce, co-owner of G2 Motorsports.

"We are quite pleased and very encouraged with the five laps we made here," said Smith. "Obviously, we were not totally competitive with Angelle, but we were certainly holding our own with the rest of the field. With three Suzukis and a V-Rod in the semis, it makes you wonder about the weight penalty on the S&S Buells.

"We're gonna build on this and use what we learned to continually upgrade the motors, and we're looking forward to Norwalk next weekend."

Ellis and the G2 team race next at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals June 28-July 1 in Norwalk, Ohio.
