I didn't mean to imply that William couldn't do it. He most certainly can! It's just that his first post seemed to imply that if you got a welder, tube bender etc, that it was all it took. All I meant was that there is alot involved. William may have plenty of experience and if so, I am mistaken. I agree that everybody has to start somewhere. Murf started doing it because he couldn't afford to race. Best place to start is hanging out at a shop or working there...part time or whatever, you can pick up alot of the tricks of the trade. Also, asking tons of questions...don't be shy. Most everybody will be glad to help.

Joe Sherwood asks, "How did Hadman, McKinney, Plueger or Don Long ever become household names in chassis building if they couldn't build their own cars to begin with?"

I can't answer any of that except to say that Don Long was building cars for other people in about 1960 (posssibly, earlier, I don't know.)

I don't think NHRA had any SFI specs, or much beyond a calibrated eyeball at that time. I saw several Don Long-built "Altered" chassis cars at Indy in '61 and '62.
