Very entertaining game, it's to bad somebody had to lose.

Thanks TS, I was thinking pretty much the same thing. That was probably one of the best little league games I have ever watched. Now I know most of you are biased towards drag racing. I know I am, but you guys are just brutal. If anyone bothered to watched, they were discussing the fact that Little League is the worlds largest organized youth sport with over 2.5 million something participants. Add in the families and friends and that's pretty big. Where does drag racing stack up amonst those numbers? Pretty far down I bet. I know I am a drag racer at heart, but I also know where drag racing is in stature to other forms of sport in this world. Face it, sometimes we're gonna get the short end of the stick.

The only idiot that i know of is the Idiots at ESPN.

I dunno, they're getting paid to show NHRA coverage and they don't even have to show it when they say they're going to show it ... seems like ESPN's got the better end of the deal.

In any case I am pretty sure that generally speaking (but not always) ESPN buffers the tape delay coverage with live events preceding NHRA purposely in case the NHRA crew needs extra time to edit when there's weather, an explosion, whatever. Other times they just know they don't have to show NHRA exactly when it's supposed to start and it's probably easier to have a tape delayed program scheduled after a live event.

We may not like it, but that's how it is ... and the only way it's going to change is if NHRA takes its business elsewhere, as Chris Cook suggested.

That game was WAY more exciting than any 1000' race!! The LLWS is 100x bigger than NHRA. Time to face reality.
I want to watch NHRA too. But Mark is dead on. I guarantee you there is far more sponsorship money thrown at this event than the Force and Schumacher teams have combined. Everything they do at the LLWS is sponsored by some big corporation ... the starting lineups, the pitching changes, the between inning summaries, the highlights, etc. LLWS is a HUGE world wide event that pales in scope to a taped NHRA drag race with TV ratings and even revenue. My 11 year old has been parked in front of the TV every day/night for a week watching these games and envisioning his Allstar team getting there in the next 2 years. Do you think he's alone? How about all the Dad's who coach LL ... think a few of them watch? If it isn't all about the kids to you, you are missing a great life.

That said, I do agree that ESPN could just schedule it better. As has been said before, there has to be plenty of historical data they could use to determine the average running time of live events.

When drag racing offers stick and ball type revenue to a network, there may be a chance. If you saw the recent MSNBC show on NASCAR you heard about incredible sums (tens of billions) of $$ being made even in a down economy. Yes, the numbers are down for them also but a 20% decline from a really HUGE number is still a huge number. It was strictly a risk/reward analysis and anybody who tells you different, doesn't understand boardroom business. To anybody besides family and friends, we are not relevant unless we provide some type of financial reward back (Don't kid yourself, this includes your employer). There has to be a WIFM (What's In It For Me). Thats BUSINESS !! Should your beef really lie with ESPN ??

Now, there is NO WAY to budget time for a live sporting event. ESPN has been doing this a long time

so you'd think by now they'd have learned that even a 7 inning baseball game will almost always be longer than 2 hours, same with an NCAA or WNBA basketball game or a pro tennis match...they consistently underestimate the time typically allocated for those sorts of things

Maybe but part of the reason drag racing is down is the late times it comes on,who wants to stay up to 1am let alone 2 am becuase of a LL game and go to work like a zombie the next day. ESPN needs to make LL games 3 hrs or maybe 2.5 hrs. Problem solved. But at least we get to see NHRA in its entirety.

I'd like to see the TV numbers on the LL game and the drags.... Sadly enough, I think we'd all be a bit more sheepish over here with knowlege of that information... :(

no doubt martin - am not a baseball guy, but found myself actually watching
the end of that game, twice if not more exciting than any MLB game;
just a much 'real' drama as the nhra show.

once again, a fuel driver @ BIR told me, 'people just do not know what
the NHRA is, much less drag racing'

I stayed up. :D, but maybe I have experience with the Monday morning zombie thing...or Tuesday morning zombie if it's after Indy.;)

I had to admit, I didn't really care when drag racing started, that was one hell of a game! Damn those youngsters can pitch! When Curacau(sp?) threw that ball back to second to try pick off that Japanese runner and it went into center field, then the center fielder almost threw the ball into the stands trying to get the runner at third letting him score I thought it was over but they come back and win it in the bottom half of the inning. What a game!
Now if only they had Erin Andrews at the game it would have been complete :D
