The Environmental Protection Agency is looking at adding NITROMETHANE as a carcinogenic chemical to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), a listing of reportable carcinogenic chemicals... in Drag Racing Online.

The last time I saw the Greek, he looked pretty good for sniffing carcinogenic Nitro all his life. What a way to go, Akron Fallout & Nitro I can smell it now.

And everybody thought that

1. The countdown

2. Paul Page

3. 1000' racing

4. Four wide

etc, etc, ad infinitum, would be the end of fuel racing:rolleyes:

Nope.

Welcome, to....... "Change you can believe in":cool:

Well.......the government still lets people smoke.

Because tobacco is taxed up the ying yang.

Other reasons too (local economy's, etc.), but don't forget, the Top Dog is a smoker.

I don't think drag racing(fuel), carries all that much water in the grand scheme.

Unfortunately, I have been waiting for the day this would happen.......

Rex,

Nitromethane is used is as a stabilizer for chlorinated solvents, which are used in dry cleaning, semiconductor processing, and de-greasing. It's used to power miniature airplanes and much less Nitro is used to power racecars.

I've posted about this potential problem for years and have been told that nitromethane fumes are perfectly harmless. Ya better hope that something other than fuel racing triggered this situation with the EPA.
If some crusader from EPA looking to make a name for him(or her)self
shows up at a race and demands air quality readings in the pits during warmups, it just might create a problem. - JMHO

Yep.. more nitro is used in the hobby industry than in all other applications combined according to an article in Popular Science a few years back...

IIRC-wasn't it reported during the nitro shortage in the 80's that its also used to spray on strawberries to make them more red?
And give me a break--the nanny police didn't just start with this administration-they have been around for a long time and getting worse thru the years.

Isn't Nitromethane used on the Space shuttle during launches? Be interesting to see what NASA says about this!

Ok Maters im confused. I read the article and it says tetranitromethane. This form has a different makeup CN4o8. Ours is CH3No2. This form is completely different. Can someone enlighten me?

The article also mentions nitromethane...

The main engines run on liquid oxygen/hydrogen. The boosters are powered by a mixture of ammonium perchlorate (oxidizer, 69.6% by weight), aluminum (fuel, 16%), iron oxide (a catalyst, 0.4%), a polymer (such as PBAN or HTPB, serving as a binder that holds the mixture together and acting as secondary fuel, 12.04%), and an epoxy curing agent (1.96%). This propellant is commonly referred to as Ammonium Perchlorate Composite Propellant, or simply APCP. (courtesy of wikipedia.org)

I'm well aware of it's uses. Buuuuuuut............. If its use is restricted, or if some doink from the EPA decides to stroll the fuel pits during warm up:eek:

Auto racing is entertainment, a "luxury", not a necessity. Of course for us here it is, but for John Q Bureaucrat, just another loud, smelly, dangerous annoyance.

For example, what about the 'citizens groups' that move near dragstrips (and airports) knowing they are there, now they have the added ammunition (thanks to the EPA), of being able to add there are 'dangerous toxins' being released into the 'air that they breathe. Cripes, that might drag out a Hollywood actor (re: dimwit) or two.

Does not matter where it is used. Just like lead in gas, nitro for racing may very well be in jeopardy. And if I was in the Hobby industry, I'd worry too.

Anyone thinking the EPA is a joke, is just joking themselves.

The "nanny police" have a great big huge supporter right at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. now, I'm sure whatever they want to do will be fine with him.

No, it certainly did not start with this administration.

But show me one (except algore), which even Bill Clinton recently cracked a joke over his 'chickenlittleisim', which would be less friendly toward auto's and racing.

Watch. ;)

Not to worry Rex, even if they did ban nitro, Drag racing would survive. It did last time.

If you read what I wrote, I said "FUEL", not "DRAG" racing.

Sorry PJ, the bulk of the fans want to see 300 mph Nitro Racing.

Heck, probably even 250 mph Nitro Racing, as long as the ground shook, and the vibrations rocked their souls.

So, OK, say Nitro got banned?

You think the sport would stay the same.

Don't forget, the fuel ban was eventually lifted.

If the Government, which the sheeple have allowed to have WAAAAAAAAAY too much power over them, clamps down with it's terrible iron fist.......

I guess you'll have to aspire to Alky racing, until someone gets a wiff of Methanol:rolleyes:

then again, there IS the decibel level....................:)

the last time I heard it's use as a Rocket fuel was the German V2's in WWII.
It was also used as a propellant in their torpedos, as it carries it's own oxygen.

Besides, even if NASA DID use Nitro, they are a Government agency.

The EPA JUST, might...............give them a pass:cool:

Besides, the shuttle only has three more launches anyway, gonna' sub to the Chinese and the Russians, and India, and Pakistan, and everyone else but the United States of what used to be....................:(

Yes, I have read what you have posted in the past, and am in agreement 100%.

This is a potentially dire situation developing.............
