The Environmental Protection Agency is looking at adding NITROMETHANE as a carcinogenic chemical to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), a listing of reportable carcinogenic chemicals... in Drag Racing Online.
Well.......the government still lets people smoke.
I don't think drag racing(fuel), carries all that much water in the grand scheme.
Unfortunately, I have been waiting for the day this would happen.......
REX
Rex,
Nitromethane is used is as a stabilizer for chlorinated solvents, which are used in dry cleaning, semiconductor processing, and de-greasing. It's used to power miniature airplanes and much less Nitro is used to power racecars.
Not to worry Rex, even if they did ban nitro, Drag racing would survive. It did last time. And everybody thought that
1. The countdown
2. Paul Page
3. 1000' racing
4. Four wide
etc, etc, ad infinitum, would be the end of fuel racing
Nope.
Welcome, to....... "Change you can believe in"

Ok Maters im confused. I read the article and it says tetranitromethane. This form has a different makeup CN4o8. Ours is CH3No2. This form is completely different. Can someone enlighten me?
Isn't Nitromethane used on the Space shuttle during launches? Be interesting to see what NASA says about this!

IIRC-wasn't it reported during the nitro shortage in the 80's that its also used to spray on strawberries to make them more red?
And give me a break--the nanny police didn't just start with this administration-they have been around for a long time and getting worse thru the years.

I've posted about this potential problem for years and have been told that nitromethane fumes are perfectly harmless. Ya better hope that something other than fuel racing triggered this situation with the EPA.
If some crusader from EPA looking to make a name for him(or her)self
shows up at a race and demands air quality readings in the pits during warmups, it just might create a problem. - JMHO
