After a disappointing round 1 holeshot loss two weeks ago at the Gatornationals, Chip Ellis heads to the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park with something to prove. Ellis and the DRAG Specialties/S&S powered Buell were flawless in preseason testing and Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying at the Gators before a poor light trailered the G2 team early. "I know what I did wrong, and I just have to go for it every time," said Ellis. "I've been ordered not to think. I've just gotta do my routine, that's the thing."
"Chip knows he just wandered a little bit at Gainesville," said George Bryce, G2 director of racing operations and a legendary driving coach. "He'll do good at Houston."
"I'm confident that Chip will do better," said George Smith, G2 Motorsports president and crew chief for the DRAG Specialties Buell. "Everybody's chompin' at the bit to show what we're capable of, and Chip wants to turn things around."
While the team didn't have much to do on the perfectly running DRAG Specialties/S&S powered Buell, they did tweak it some and spent a good deal of time on customer bikes. "We've had a pretty hectic week at the G2 shop with Chip's bike, Peggy Llewellyn's bike, Hector Arana and his equipment, and Junior Pippin's bike," continued Smith. "Junior's going to Phoenix to race the bike at the AHDRA race. It's all gone well."
"We worked on Hector's new bike for a couple of days, and worked on our bike some," said Ellis. "We did some stuff to my bike, nothing too major. Just some tune-up stuff here and there."
"We're very fortunate to have a fulltime job making the DRAG Specialties/S&S bike run good at the racetrack," said Bryce. "We've been doing a lot of work to get Chip prepared, so he's pretty well fixed."
Ellis got some relaxation time in as well, riding his dirt bike and going to the lake. The Houston track has treated Chip well. In 2001 he won an AMA/Prostar Funnybike race there, going 6.50 at 206 mph. Although Ellis probably won't go that quick or fast this weekend, the team has high expectations. "We're ready to go again," said Smith. "We've got a good bike and a good rider and we expect to move up in the standings. We're very well prepared again and we're ready to rock and roll."
The entire G2 Motorsports organization extends its condolences to John Force Racing and the family of Eric Medlin. "Eric won when I won Sonoma last year," remembered Ellis. "They'd given all the winners a guitar, and he signed my guitar and was the first one to play it."
The S&S powered Buell of Ellis's G2 sister team of Karl Klement Racing and Peggy Llewellyn will feature a special tail section wrapped with an Eric Medlin memorial. "I grew up in an era when John Meyers was my idol," said Shane Maloney, co-crew chief on Llewellyn's Buell. Peggy's website proudly displays a photo of her with Myers, the late Pro Stock Motorcycle champion who drove for George and Jackie Bryce's Star Racing. "John Myers always smiled and laughed and everybody liked him. Eric Medlin was the same way. It'll look really neat on the bike and will honor someone who was very important to our sport."
