Electrical Problems Put Smith on the Trailer Earlier Than Expected

Rickie Smith and his Skull Gear/Torco Race Fuels Chevrolet didn’t have the weekend they had expected. After a wacky weekend of 1/8th mile racing at the IHRA Amalie Oil Texas Nationals presented by NAPA Auto Parts at San Antonio Raceway, Smith ended up in the eighth qualifying position going into Sunday.

Changing motors late Saturday night in hopes of running quicker on raceday, Smith and his team still didn’t get the outcome they wanted.

“We have been testing the last few months and putting up incredible numbers, than we show up at the first race and it just all went down hill. I don’t get it. We have changed everything, but the car itself. We worked hard into the night every evening and I think we have figured out the problem. We will assess things next week and hopefully be back running strong at Rockingham,” said Smith.

Smith went into round one on Sunday against Cary Goforth, running a time of 4.177et at 171.79mph to get the win. Unfortunately things wouldn’t go so well in round two when facing off against John Montecalvo. Smith left on Montecalvo by more than four hundredths; however he would soon have to abort the run due to severe tire shake forcing him to go towards the center line.

“We had some bad luck this weekend, but trust me we will bounce back stronger than ever. We have got one bad hotrod and when I get the kinks worked out of it everyone will see it,” said Smith.

Smith is sitting fourth in the IHRA Championship points and will race near his hometown next time out. The next race is slated for Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, NC April 20-22.
