When 1000' racing was announced as an interim measure a couple of weeks ago I was very vocal in my opposition to the NHRA adopting it as a permanent standard for the fuel classes. In fact my opposition was so adamant that I said that I would return my already purchased NHRA Northwest National tickets to Glendora. True to my word I wrote a letter explaining that while I fully supported any and all measures to increase driver safety, I was also concerned about the integrity and history of the sport and would not support a permanent change to 1000' foot racing. I put that letter along with my tickets in an addressed, stamped, envelope and asked my wife to put it in the outgoing mail the next morning.

However, sometimes life has it's little surprises. One of those surprises happened on Wednesday evening when my wife came to me with a familiar looking envelope in her hand and said, "Do you you still want me to mail this?"
I guess she obviously knows me better than I sometimes suspect. I had already softened my stance somewhat after listening to the various driver comments during the television broadcast from Denver. But to make a long story short, I decided to reconsider my previous decision for at least one more day and then on Thursday night I made the decision to at least attend the Friday session. And I'm glad I did.

I'll let others who attended the Seattle race talk about the action on the track. I only want to say that it only took one walk through the pits on Friday morning to come to grips with what an ass I was. As I watched various drivers meeting and interacting with fans, including my eleven year old daughter, I was reminded once again of what I already knew: these drivers we look up to and love are flesh and blood human beings like the rest of us, not characters or actors like we see on television or a movie screen. I don't want to see one more of these drivers unnecessarily injured or worse. For that reason I will be supportive of the drivers in the efforts currently being made to make the sport safer. Does that mean that I no longer want to see a return to 1320' racing? Absolutely not! I still remain convinced that 1320' is integral to maintaining the integrity and history of drag racing. But safety must always come first - even if it means 1000' foot racing as an interim measure.

So flame away. I undoubtedly deserve it for being quick to engage my mouth. In the meantime I'll be busy picking feathers from my teeth after eating shovefuls of crow.

(BTW, I did end up attending all three days of the Seattle race.)

Well said, Rich. I too am a long time participant who "burned up that quarter mile" (thanks Jan and Dean) but the safety issue is paramount with me also. And as I posted earlier, after attending at Denver, I found the racing to be pretty darn good to 1000 ft. Thanks for explaining to all the best reason in the world to make whatever changes are necessary to insure safer conditions, and doing it very eloquently.

No flames here, Rich, just a lot of respect for sharing your change of heart with us. Well done, sir. I salute you! (And I think you have eaten enough crow by now....go get a burger!)

Give your wife a big hug for not mailing those tickets!!!!:p:):p
Glad that you had a good time!!!

You should have seen the look on the look on her face when she asked me if I still wanted that letter mailed. It was priceless. She had my number for sure. :D But the hug is already done. In fact she went to the races with me yesterday and had a great time.

I'm very happy you had a good time Rich.

You always provoke thought...........and THAT is a good thing.

I'm not going to flame you one little bit, Rich. I respect you a ton for feeling as strongly as you did to be willing to return already purchased tickets to show your displeasure. I'll be at Brainerd because 1) I've had reserved seats for months now and 2) it's in my backyard and I'm blessed to have made quite a few racer friends there that I always enjoy hanging out with. I'll also be at Indy because, well, it's Indy. While I'd prefer that the fuel classes race at 1320 ft, I intend to watch with an open mind as well as enjoy the kickass sportsman show that takes place there. Again, no flames or crow from me.

Rich - no need to eat crow.

You took a stand and that's your right. I have to say I was agreeing with you on principle...but I also want ALL drivers to be safe. If that means I have to watch 1000', I will...begrudgingly (is that even a word??) but also knowing that it is what it is and the best for everyone involved.

Rich,

You married a very smart Lady. Crow is very good baked in a wild blackberry pie. Forget the crow, just have the Blackberry pie...

glad you had fun

Yes, begrudgingly is a word. So is upliftedness, but I digress. Upliftedness is the feeling you get when you done good. I think the NHRA has done a good job by taking immediate action. I really hope that they go back to 1320. It just wouldn't be the same. I am a HUGE of fan of the cars of old, and I want to be able to compare the cars throughout history. That's my take.

Rich, very powerful and brave post. Congrats on having the courage to post it.

If only the other hard liners would take the risk, watch the show -- or better yet get back out to the traqck -- and try it. It's still racing, it still smells and sounds like racing, and the racing has never been tighter or cleaner.

I hate the idea of losing 1/4 mile racing for good. But of all the possible interim measures they could have done, this one works for me.

If you haven't taken your wife out to a nice dinner, you really need to.

Takes a lot of guts to hold your hat in your hands and admit that Rich. Kiss your woman a million times and I'm glad you had a good time.

It was fine I guess. I think it's helping with the costs. I'd like to see them go back to a quartermile and go with Dale Armstron's suggestion. At least this cuts down on the global warming.

So you changed your mind so what. Good for you .You'll be happy watching the future of NHRA. No need to eat crow over it. You had a right to your opinion as much then as now.

This isn't a 'right or wrong' issue. It's a matter of opinion.
