"Mr Livingstone's initiative is the latest to discourage ownership of "gas guzzlers".
That tells you all you need to know about the motivations, right there. Reminds me of a frequent socialist caller to my favorite evening radio talk shows. The subject was taxes and his reason as to why they should remain "progressive" to the host was "How much money do you NEED?" He was (arrogantly so, in my opinion) concerned more with how much of someone's own money they got to keep instead of with what provides the overall net gain for everyone.
What Mr. Livingstone would ENcourage me to do would be to take my game elsewhere by moving to a more tax friendly neighborhood. Reminds me of Johnny Carson buying his yacht in Mexico to avoid the luxury taxes.
You've hit the nail on the head there without knowing I think Ron. As usual John posts more political crap without any real observation as to the reasoning.
The whole point of this is not to earn huge revenue, although that is obviously a by-product, it is actually intended as you suggest to move people to a more tax friendly place be that either by reducing their car use, their size of car, or their location. If you had ever had to drive in the centre of London you would understand why these sort of measures are needed. Recently at 9pm on a friday night (way after the rush hour work traffic had gone) it took me nearly 3 hours to go 20 miles in central London thru nothing other than shear weight of traffic. You will also find that most 4x4's used in central London every day are used needlessly by parents taking and picking up children from school when it would be far healthier and probably safer on Londons roads if they walked half a mile instead of reaching for the range rover keys!
What should also be considered is that most salaries in London are weighted on average around 15% to 20% over and above the salary paid for the same job elsewhere in the UK.
Hope this gives you more background info on why the problem is there in the first place and why such a taxation may be the only way forward
I just don't think taxes should be used as a means to try to socially engineer the lives of others. Just an absolutely wrong application of them, IMO. I think taxing people should be avoided at all costs to begin with. If the damn things are wrong, outlaw them. If they're not, leave them alone. Don't pussyfoot around and try to do it in such a backdoor way as with tax laws. It's just wrong. Such a misapplication of taxing that it's stealing, IMO.
I've long said that your media airways are ripe for the conservative movement that's been taking place in this country for years. Someone could make millions.
The Democats in this Country would LOVE nothing better than to incorporate a policy like that in this Country. If they could get away with it, you can bet on it.
