Does anyone oil a track

Sure seems there are the usual suspects with oiling the track. I've not noticed McMillen as much as some other folks.

Cory Mac made one hell of a mess! We are still down. Terry didn't oil the track in the first round even though he did hurt the engine.

If there was an award for oil-downs, there'd be a number of contenders.

The problem is that, without penalties, there's not a lot of pain on the team that does the oil down. They get off the track, get back to their pit, and because everyone rebuilds every time, it's not that big of a deal. They don't have to sit in the staging lanes, all buckled in waiting for their pass. In fact, the delay gives them extra time to fix their stuff.

Still, the key point is that small teams can't afford the new parts and extra hands to prevent them. They buy used parts from other teams, make due with iffy parts that the big teams wouldn't risk, and don't have the extra guys around to triple check everything. They still need to get out there, but just don't have the luxury to do it first rate every time. I understand it, but sure don't like sitting through it.

My only beef is with the teams that push that too far -- and go out there just hoping that on a wing and a prayer maybe, just maybe, we can make a clean, full pull. Those folks need the penalty, just to reinforce that actions have consequences.

I am pretty sure that Cory cracked a rearend housing that dumped all the gear oil that was so hard to clean up.

If you are saying Terry doesn't care, then you are saying that he is a poor sportsman and a poor competitor. Is that what you are saying? In every interaction I've had with him and his team, they have been consummate professionals and tough competitors. I would think twice about saying someone who is a licensed pro in this sport would create dangerous situations without remorse.

I think he does care, and I would also submit that oil downs are part of the game and fall under the cover of the slot machine principle. You COULD win 3 times in a row, you could also go 1,000 pulls and never win. You never know.

Is it plain ole gear oil or that synthetic stuff?

What exactly happens to the track surface and the build up of rubber and traction compound on it when this type of oil gets on it?

according to the tv broadcasts.. they said Terry did not get an oil down penilty? so who was the culprit on the oil down?

That is what happened. He tweeted how sorry he was for all the competitors and the time lost. He wasn't happy it happened either, for what it is worth.
