Disappointing Weekend for Smith

The 2007 NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion and race winner last time out had a difficult weekend in with his Nitrofish Buell in Commerce, Georgia.

Smith who qualified in the third position did not make the passes that he expected himself to make throughout the weekend. Getting down only half of the qualifying runs, Smith made a big change for raceday on Sunday.

“We started the weekend with a different motor,” said Smith. “We didn’t want to use our race motor unless we had to. We were trying to see how things would run with the back up. It ran okay, but we decided to put in the race motor for race day.”

Going into the first round, Smith had to face off against Mike Berry. Cutting a good light and running a 6.988 et, Smith’s quickest time of the weekend, Smith would get the round win and head into second round.

Having to face Angelle Sampey for yet the third time in the second round this year, Smith knew she would be tough. Leaving the line dead even, Smith’s Nitrofish Buell just wouldn’t run and Smith would lose the round. This is the first time this year Smith has not made it to the semi-finals.

“We made the wrong call,” said Smith. “Today is the first time we ran this motor all weekend, so we tried something different with it and obviously it did not work. I am very disappointed in how we ran this weekend, but that just make me work harder. We are going home to regroup before we go to St. Louis.”

Smith heads to St. Louis as the defending race winner. Last year Smith took home the most points possible (138) at a race when he got the pole, won the race and set the national record in St. Louis.

Smith sits third in the Championship point standings. Less than two rounds out of the lead.
