MADISON, Ill. (May 6) – The hot streak that the Budweiser/Lucas Oil Top Fuel team was riding cooled a bit at the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals despite consistency and strong qualifying times.
Driver Brandon Bernstein qualified third at Gateway International Raceway, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis , with a 4.612-second elapsed time at 326.87 miles per hour, top speed of the weekend in the dragster category. The Kenny Bernstein-owned team was the recipient of the Full Throttle Award for the most consistency in qualifying.
In the first round of Sunday’s eliminations, Brandon Bernstein pulled the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster into the staging beams to face Bruce Litton. It was Litton who crossed the finish line first with a 4.622/321.12 versus Bernstein’s 4.648/315.78.
“We were consistent all weekend,” said Bernstein, “and I always have said consistency wins rounds and races. In this instance, Bruce’s team just had a little bit more in the tune-up, and it held.
Tim (Richards, crew chief), Kim, and the team did a fine job this weekend. It was just a strange circumstance that ended our day.
“We were disappointed to be out early, especially in St. Louis . We had a lot of Budweiser executives who came out to cheer us on and we wanted to do well for them.
“We’ll look forward to racing in Bristol in two weeks and going some rounds.”
Bernstein is second in the countdown to eight, 23 points out of the lead.
