DANIEL REED JUST MISSES FAIRYTALE FAREWELL WITH RUNNER UP AT SUMMERNATIONALS

Reed Racing team driver and reigning ANDRA Drag Racing Supercharged Outlaws Champion Daniel Reed made a spectacular return to the quarter mile strip for the first time in over 6 months at the Western Sydney International Dragway on the weekend (15th-16th February)

Not competing for back to back titles in the 2007/2008 season due to heavy work commitments, Daniel made a one off appearance at the 2008 Summernationals in the car he won the Championship with to assist in the handover to its new owners.

Going into the event he hadn’t placed any high expectations on himself as it wasn’t the focus of the weekend, but he also knew he had the point to prove that last year’s Title was not a fluke.

After qualifying well, Daniel then proceeded to knock over his competition through the elimination rounds before going under his dial in handicap in the Final, meaning he was disqualified and just missed out on a fairytale farewell win for his old car.

“It is fantastic result for the team that we have done so well at the Summernationals, I really wasn’t expecting it as the weekend for me was more about showing the car’s new owners the ropes on how to run and service it,” Daniel Reed said.

“I’m a very competitive person though and I always had the goal to try to take out the event in the back of my mind.”

“It was disappointing to go under my dial in by just a couple of hundredths of a second as I had the race won, but it was still great to be back behind the wheel and driving well.”

“I am now also licensed in both a Top Alcohol Funny Car and Top Alcohol Dragster so hopefully one day soon I might get the opportunity to have a crack at the Group 1 ranks.”

Daniel’s father Steven Reed was himself subsequently racing in the professional Top Alcohol bracket in his Reed Racing Camaro Funny Car.

As one of the categories big hitters, Steven began the event well sitting in the number 3 position after the first round of qualifying before settling in the number 6 spot going into the elimination rounds.

With the huge Finals day crowd being treated to some spectacular side-by-side racing, Steven’s quarter-final was one of the highlights of the first round of Top Alcohol were he and fellow competitor Aaron Hambridge were locked together wheel to wheel for the length of the quarter mile strip, with Aaron just getting to the finish line first by 25 thousandths of a second.

“It was a reasonably successful weekend for us with Daniel’s (Reed) runner up and my quarter-final result,” Steven Reed said.

“I had my Funny Car running really well, there was no sign of the dreaded tyre shake all weekend and it was straight as an arrow and smooth to drive.”

“We thought that we had enough in it to get over Aaron in the first round but he really showed he is a class competitor with his new car and just pipped me.”

“Everything is looking really good for the rest of the Championship though with my car’s set ups and we will really begin to turn up the heat next round.”

The Reed Racing team will next be taking to the track for the 7th Round of the Top Alcohol ANDRA Championship Drag Racing series at the Western Sydney International Dragway, New South Wales from the 2nd–3rd May.
