Right.

As the fire dies down the updraft that was created by the heat generated lessens and then air is allowed back in to equalize the pressue differential.

Beginning the fire and almost out the same conditions can be present.

I have seen this happen and also have reproduced and demonstrated it.

Also other sources such as furnaces, stove exhaust draft hoods, attic fans, air conditioning, additional fireplaces in use, and openings away from the wind loaded side of the house (leeching) can pull air down that, or any flue.

What would I know? :)

Rex thanks for the imput, I think allowing the logs/fire to cool down as much as I did was 90% of it. We usually burn Pine which burns pretty Hot, not sure what was in there this last time though.

Around my house Joe its a fate worse than death or at least a mild concussion for the one who leaves the flue open allowing warmth to exit a dead [ in your case an almost dead fire ] appearing fire. Yeah thats too simple !

Now as a former New Mexican citizen [ Carlsbad ] I am familiar with a certain cities bragging about what 363 1/2 days of sunshine a year.
I have never heard Albuquerque brag about snow up to your arse nor 6 months of Monsoon season.
Global warnings a biatch ain't it. LOL
Maybe I should head up there and open a snowplow store!
Should be plenty to spare that could be shipped from the North East.
Have a good one and stay safe.
You can always change the tourist draw to Americas winter wonderland.
Actually I remember deep snow on I 40 East of town a fairly regular thing.

Your welcome.

However, Warm air would updraft from the structure as long as it was warmer inside than outside. With enough combustion air (replacement or 'fresh'), present you would not experience this problem.

You did make it clear it was occasional, but never is a better option.

In connecticut it is code that any new home built with a fireplace or any fireplace constructed (added) to an existing home must have a fresh air inlet that will allow outdoor air to supply and sustain the fire without removing air from inside the structure.

I install quite a few of these and they pretty much solve most of these type issues.

Good luck with this and if you ever need advise feel free to call the # I supplied.

Either that or Ron (Nitrohaulic) knows how to get in touch.

Steve Stucker has a theme for every day and he said today was "Buy a snow shovel day, because you know, that if you have one, you won't need it, but if you don't have one..."
