actuakky you really don't want that, If all the countdown haters did walk, there would be a big drop in attendence, which means money for the gate and then sponsors to follow. Its best to have us around fighting against the injustice that has cheapened the inegrity of our championships.

Eddie did exactly what would have worked Countdown or not- he stepped up and showed up in the money round more consistantly than everyone else, winners included, all year... EK earned that Wally and the big check through consistancy, which I will give props for..

Cruzer took advantage of the system to his advantage by playing by the rules dealt to ALL the competitors and having his game on when it really mattered. They earned their World Championship by knowing when to run strong after getting into the "playoffs"...

The big question is- would the flopper guys still wind up the way they are if they had to run to the 1320 stripe?? We pretty much can be sure that TF would be the same (maybe not as overwhelmingly)....

Not so quick buddy, not even close to being an all year performer thanks for Gary Miller's work we see Eddie's performance pre countdown

Still how bad does it look to have a champ who can't win a race?

There wouldnt be that much of a difference, new people will always come into the sport

Dude, give it a rest. Your beloved old points structure had a TF champ who never won a race during the year. We know you don't like the new system, and have known it for the past two years, so please stop with the constant griping about something you can not change. This is supposed to be a thread congratulating Cruz on the title and it is has turned into a PJ anti-Countdown campaign.

I love how there are many people on here who have complained but yet you need to make it about me. Yeah I hate the countdown and you love it. Yet I can't talk about it but you can.
There is the ignore button feel free to use it if my being here bothers you that much.

Also understand that when it was done in TF they also earned points at div races then. They won the title by dominating his div. Plus there were much fewer national events. Actually I wonder how many raced the full circuit then. Anyway it was't good then either but I was only 3 or 4 and didn't know it

PJ, you don't bother me at all, just the constant complaining about the Countdown annoys me. It would be one thing if the complaining would result in something, but it is not going to change a thing. The Countdown will be here next year, the year after, the year after, etc. The format may change, but the concept will stay. It is just frustrating to see a good thread which is supposed to congratulate a driver on a major accomplishment get turned into the "Countdown Sucks" thread. The same thing goes for the Eddie Krawiec thread.

I get tired about complaining about it. But I believe in the power of change....oh yuck that sounded Obamaish anyway. I believe that it can and will change. Sadly maybe not back to the season long champion but if they finally make the playoff teams race each other I could actually live with. The best driver may still not win but like the Giants in football last year at least they would have to beat playoff teams to get there.

Stand back and look at what the countdown has given us over 2 years. A champ who lost 1/2 his first round races (this would be like a .500 team winning the title in other sports, sure it can happen but), a champ that only could beat 1 other countdown car over the entire playoffs (this would mean this years super bowl champ get to play the Lions. Raiders and Chiefs then only one playoff team to win the title) and a driver that didn't win a race (as I've said this mean the Lions could still win a championship)

To me it cheapens the sport and makes the championship meaningless. Out of 8 championsips over the 2 years the season's best has won 2.

Change the racing distance, take away nitro, throttle stops, whatever else, like em or hate them. To me the countdown is an injustice and people like Tim and Hight and Fuller are grossly effected by it. To me that is wrong

Folks....Your speaking to a brick wall in regards to the countdown. PJ does not, and will not accept "CHANGE" in any form in regards to the sport that he loves!...TRUST ME, I HAVE TRIED!

I think his opinion of the countdown is incorrect, (as I love it....althought it could use some "TWEAKING") but this countdown, ALTHOUGH "SCREWED" a GREAT MAN, and WELL DESERVING RACER TIM WILKERSON, permitted my friend, Jack to contend for the championship, (with a car that next to Cruz's ride, was the best @ 1000' racing!)

It pains me to say this, because I am not a fan of his, but, I respect the work that Cruz and his team put together this season. HE WAS THE MOST CONSISTANT THAT CRUZ HAS EVER BEEN!!! I usually don't agree with his "Staging tactics", and agree that "Tact" is not his strenght, but.... He is your 2008 Funny Car Champion.... Plain and Simple! THAT TEAM GOT IT DONE WHEN IT COUNTED! That is what NHRA was looking for with this countdown, to spark some Interest from those (WHO UNLIKE US) would be intersted in a "PLAYOFF" Format.

YES It should be changed to really permit a "PLAYOFF", but CRUZ WON IT FAIR AND SQUARE!

Congrats to him, and his team. BUT ESPECIALLY TO RAHN TOBLER! Mr. TOBLER, YOU BROUGHT CALM TO A GUY WHO HAD NONE! YOU BROUGHT CONSISTANCY TO A TEAM THAT WAS IN CONSISTANT!!! That is a championship Well Deserved!

Um no I am fine with change. Just have it make sense and serve a purpose. I don't like the countdown but even with that I have said that if they actually had the playoff teams race each other then it is a viable solution. Put 8 playoff teams on on side of the ladder and the other side is still open for non playoff teams. For someone so attached to a true season long points standing as I am I would think thats a pretty big change that I'd be willing to accept. Not my first choice by any means but one that is doable.

I know I dance a tight line and have probably crossed it many times. My issue is with the rules of the countdown and not with the people that have benifitted from it. They played by the rules and won, my contention is that the rules are wrong.

Even your sentence that the countdown permitted Beckmen to contend. Doesn't that seem odd? If someone needs help with points to contend do they really deserve to? Give me a trampoline during a game and I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean its right.

As for bringing in people, it didn't. We saw the numbers drop last year for the countdown. We were also told it would help small budget teams and we see how that worked out.

PJ, I understand your passion against the countdown, but the system is just different. You want a system that rewards the team that can most consistent performance over the entire year. Playoff systems reward teams that can meter their performance and control it to peak at the correct time. Different reward structure, not sure which is better.

Look at baseball -- teams work all year to win their division, but there are weak and strong divisions. The playoffs don't consist of the four best teams, they consist of the three division winners and the next best team. One of those division winners can (and often is) NOT one of the four best teams in the league. But the system still works.

Worse yet, look at football, which has the same kind of system as baseball, but with a sudden death format -- one loss and you're not just behind, you're done. How fair is that? One stupid play, by one player and your season is over.

The countdown isn't that onerous, you have to perform the best over six races. I understand that it specifically, and by design, hoses the team that was the best in the regular season. I think it says something that Schumacher, who was so consistent over the season, was able to maintain that, and peak, in the countdown. They clearly deserved to win.

If Schumacher had collapsed, and ended the season with 6 DNQs, would you still want them to win? They would've, under the old system. Would that be fair?

I don't love it. I just "get it", and will live with it...

I keep seeing different versions of that mentioned. Excuse my harshness for a moment but, bullsh*t!

Meter. What team owner in the world is going to have his crewchief come up to him and say "We can win this one, boss" and the owner says "No! It's not time to peak just yet." Sounds like an anti-freeze commercial. They're going to take every freaking win they can get.

Makes about as much sense as the headlines. So and so is going to try to win this one. Picture George Carlin, RIP. No sh*t. You mean they didn't drive 2,000 miles to lose in the first round?

I think you folks are confusing good and being lucky at the right times. Anyone COULD get lucky over the course of an entire season but, odds would be more against it.

Under the last system (17:4:2) I can see "lucky" being a big part of it. But over 6 races? You think Wilkerson was just "unlucky" over the last six races? He lost by almost 100 points, five rounds -- in just a 6 race stretch. I love the guy, and really wanted him to win it all, but that's not "unlucky", that's a collapse.

Since we're all human and haven't figured out the perfecting of every variable, there's always an element of luck and always a chance of "falling through the cracks." The pre-countdown system would have more eliminated that in terms of odds.

I'm not arguing in favor of ANY countdown system. :D

Since this thread originally was started to congratulate Cruz on his Championship, I`m going to derail the derail....CONGRATS CRUZ!! You had one bada$$ hotrod from Labor Day on! Glad I was there to see you win your second title. It was just as good as when I was there in `92, when you won your first! Awesome job!!

I will just make one comment, they did crown Cruz the champ, but you should have seen the standing ovation Wilk got when he was introduced as the number 2 man!!! as they say the house rocked!!!!! brought tears to my eyes, and be glad you were not there for the Cruzer's speech!!!

so.... all of you who are saying that the countdown is not fair and does not determine the true champion and is a screwed up system, were you saying the same thing when the Patriots lost the super bowl last year......

Seriously?

Hey all, who do you think would win in a game of checkers, the 2008 Army Team, or the 2007 New England Pats? Personally I think Might Mouse would swoop in and whip them both, but that's just me. :D
