DALLAS, Texas - Troy Critchley gets only one opportunity per season to race at his team owner's home track and with that said, he wanted to give Dave Wood something to smile about. Critchley did just that by reaching the final round of the O'Reilly NHRA Fallnationals in Dallas, Texas.
Critchley dropped a close race opposite of Shelly Payne in the final round. He and the crew gave it all they had with critically wounded engine en route to the final round.
"We tried really hard to win it," Critchley said. "We definitely had a strong car this weekend and I am proud of our crew for the hard work and effort they put in this weekend. I think we showed the potential this car has this weekend and we'll refine our performances and come out swinging in Virginia."
Critchley's drive to the final round began on Saturday as he he entered eliminations as the third quickest with a 6.126, 226.89 performance during the final qualifying session.
Undeterred by his last minute heroics, Critchley systematically worked his way through the program beginning with a 6.152, 227.46 victory over Travis Swearingen.
Critchley needed only a 6.293, 233.44 to grab the second round victory over the 1963 Corvette of Harold Laird. He shook the tires during the course of the run and instinctly pedaled his way to success.
Critchley gained an easy break in the semi-finals when Kirk Kuhns broke just prior to the burnout. He drove the award-winning 1970 Barracuda to its best run of the weekend with a 6.096, 236.46 to earn lane choice in the final round over Payne.
In the final round, Payne legged out the victory with her best run of the weekend, a 6.091, 231.68. Critchley put up a valiant effort with a 6.170, 235.97.
In the end, Wood was pleased with the performance of his team.
"I am so proud of these guys," Wood said. "They never quit and even though we went into that final round with one hand tied behind our backs, I am so proud that no one ever quit. This team deserves a lot of credit for the great job they did this weekend."
