DINWIDDIE, Va. - Troy Critchley has had an interesting last two races on the NHRA AMS tour. The Australian-born driver of the AMS Staff Leasing-sponsored 1970 Barracuda has run 239 miles per hour and reached the final round in consecutive events. This weekend in Richmond, Virginia, Critchley would love nothing more than to combine these feats in the same weekend.
If the weather cooperates during this weekend's NHRA Torco Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park, he could potentially pull off the two performance feats simultaneously.
"Virginia Motorsports Park is a track that has a reputation for being quick and fast," Critchley said. "We have the right combination to pull it off and we will just have to hope fate nods favorably on us. We do have a strong car."
Critchley has experienced a rollercoaster season of highs and lows but the success has outweighed the negatives. A pair of parachute malfunctions put the team behind the eight ball but did little to break their resolve.
Armed with the potent combination of "Power by Critchley and Tune by Moon," Critchley stormed to a solid qualifying effort in Memphis and then followed it up with the fastest speed ever recorded (239.40) in Pro Modified history. Only a minor parts failure after a substantial holeshot prevented him from going further in eliminations.
The next stop on the tour got off to a slow start but thundered in the end. Critchley scored a berth in final eliminations during the final session and ascended as high as third and systematically battled his way to the final round before dropping a tough race to former Top Fuel driver Shelly Payne.
The most inspiring part of the final round appearance was not because the team battled their way to the final with an obviously wounded engine; instead it was because the accolades came in the hometown of their team owner and sponsor Dave Wood.
"We gave it our best effort," Critchley said. "We wanted to win badly. There will be other opportunities. This is a good team."
