Coughlin remains a top-half player despite heat

Following a pattern that repeated itself across the Pro Stock field, Jeg Coughlin Jr. couldn't find a quicker way down Indianapolis Raceway Park in Saturday's two super-hot qualifying session. His best pass remains Friday evening's 6.675 at 206.01 mph, which places his JEGS.com Cobalt seventh overall out of 33 cars attempting to make the 16-car field.

"It appears a lot of the top cars are struggling," Coughlin said. "No worries. We've been in this position before and we know how to work our way out of it. Certainly, Sunday has become a very important day for us and we need to make sure we capitalize on our last two qualifying chances.

"We're seventh right now with our best run being the first one out of the gate Friday night, and that was in the least preferred lane. We had the good lane for the first time this afternoon and just didn't get it done."

Racers are now focusing on Sunday's early session, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

"It could be the best weather conditions we'll see all weekend," said Coughlin, a three-time U.S. Nationals winner with six total victories at this track. "We just haven't found the right set-up yet but we're hoping to hit it tomorrow.

"On the other hand, it appears we're solidly in the field so that's always a good thing. The first step towards winning a race is to qualify in the field and barring anything crazy happening we'll stay in the top 16."
