Australia 2015 Winternationals - finals.jpg

Was excited to see Cory Mac back going rounds and getting a big win even if outside the NHRA

The Australian Winternationals at Willowbank is as big an even as they have down under

Some spectacular fiery engine explosions , but kept going rounds until a huge fireball in the finals but got the win

Very cool, hope to see him back on the NHRA schedule soon

Reports on the internet (CompPlus) are that he has a crushed vertebrae in his back. Ouch. Amplifies just how lucky LD was. Also, the chassis is purported to only have had 5 or 6 passes on it and is the same chassis manufacturer of LD's failed chassis.

Get well soon Phil!

EDIT: Link to CompPlus interview with LaMattina's Crew Chief. Interesting read.

Phil's crash was scary as hell. This team and family are without a doubt some of the best people I have ever met in the sport, and to see Phil go through that crash Again (had the same thing happen 8 or so years ago) is just unbelievable.... The parallels between Larry Dixon and Phil are inevitable but the fact that they have both had virtually the same accident twice each is equally unbelievable. His injuries are serious - shattered vertebrae and rib damage but they are saying that he should make a full recovery but it will be 12 months plus.

The car was 5 runs old - it wasn't a second hand car, everything was new. Something Failed dramatically to cause this crash.

Remember that Phil's brother, John, races in Top Fuel as well, their Brother Ange (Angelo) is the team manager.... not to mention the third generation in Junior Dragsters. Phil also has an outlaw fuel funny car that they race occasionally. This family are true racers through and through, and I hope that they don't give it away after this.

Get well soon Phil.

Managed to chat to Cory on Sunday morning before eliminations. Despite the Lamattina accident casting a shadow from Saturday afternoon onwards, Cory was having a great time and enjoyed working with Lee again. Lee mentioned on Facebook that he 'came out of retirement' to do this race with Santo. It's no secret the Rapisarda's and Lee are great friends - I wouldn't be surprised to see him down under again next year as a once a year deal. Bobby Bennett did a great job as usual, too. Pretty cool to have some NHRA representation at this race. Phil Lamattina is in hospital just down the road from me - they are operating on his shattered vertebra on Monday. I really hope they don't give it away after this.....they bring so much to Top Fuel in Australia.

Top Fuel wasn't exactly a clean show all weekend - even for Lee Beard, who has tuned more fuel cars down a track than most combined - more carnage and tyre shake than normal. This event can be a crapshoot sometimes - the excellent air and ultra-sticky surface....it's almost too good, and it often takes quite a few runs before teams really get a handle on it. If this event isn't on your bucket list, I highly recommend it. the atmosphere at this event is electric. Having attended NHRA events, you guys do a slick job of getting things done in a quick timeframe. We still have a few things to learn in that department. Other than that, an NHRA fan would thoroughly enjoy our Winternationals.
