Dave Connolly Qualifies Third, Jeg Coughlin Sixth for Winternationals

POMONA, Calif. - Dave Connolly and Jeg Coughlin Jr. got Cagnazzi Racing's new Pro Stock team off to a good start Saturday, qualifying fourth and sixth respectively for Sunday's season-opening Carquest Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

The teammates' performances were a mere five-thousandths of a second apart. Connolly qualified the TORCO/Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt fourth with a best of 6.656 seconds at 207.94 mph while Coughlin - returning to fulltime NHRA POWERade Series competition for the first time in a year - was sixth, 6.661 at 207.98 mph, in the Slammers Ultimate Milk Chevy Cobalt.

Connolly, who won four times and finished third in points last year, meets Max Naylor (13th, 6.675 at 207.37 mph) in the first round and Coughlin, a three-time series Pro Stock champion, races Jim Yates (11th, 6.671 at 207.43 mph).

"Our cars went down the track on every qualifying run and ran close together in elapsed times," said Connolly, of Elyria, Ohio. "We qualified in the top half of the field and I think we showed a lot of promise."

"We improved on every session with the exception of the last one when we put in a new motor,' said Coughlin. "It's not a bad start to the 2007 season qualifying sixth. Dave and I are on opposite sides of the latter and, ideally, we like to think of a one-two finish Sunday but we have a lot of work ahead of us before we can think about anything like that.

"We have two identically-built Cobalts. Everything Dave and I have are within just a few ticks of each other. It's pretty much identical."
