Seems to me like starting the timer off the nose of the car will lead to slower elapsed times. Currently with starting the timer with the wheel, the car gets a "head start" on breaking the beam due to the roll out of the tire (and the nose of the car is closer to the finish line in the first place). If this new system starts the clock as soon as the nose of the car moves it should result in a slower ET. Guess we'll have to see how it plays out.

so what is the advantage of this? it kinda seems like change for the sake of change...

It would eliminate any roll out, and make it harder to deep stage. It also makes an exact quarter mile (or '1,000) racetrack for all competitors.

You would never again get a bad ET from the car being to low, you would never again red light by pulling the wheels up out of the beam, you would never again have an advantage if your car has a longer nose, you would never again have a rear wheel start, front spindle stagger would be a thing of the past. And that's just to name a few.

I think it's an interesting idea, right now it's just being looked at for NHRA although it has been run at a number of ADRL races, as long as two years ago. Have you heard anyone complaining about it?

To quote Mr Brockmeyer
"It is new technology and I think it will be the starting technology of the future. It will make things a whole different ball game.”

I think it will be interesting to see how this works out. Like Alan said, it would eliminate a lot of the starting line "tricks" now in play, and level the field.

When you get down to it, what real difference would that make?

Throw out the record books. Those are all old front tire start records, we'll have new front end start records now! :p:p

The biggest change in ET would be in PS, they have the longest overhang. Next is FC, followed by TF. The smallest would be PSB, they have almost none,

great....next thing will be getting rid of the yellow pre-stage and stage lights at the top of the tree! ...god help us if they ever try 4 wide racing as well! :D

“I have been testing and working on this infra-red wall for quite some time, about five years,” said Brockmeyer whose CompuLink Timing Systems company is based is Silverthorne, Colo., which is one hour west of Morrison. “We actually used a similar version of it with ADRL cars at several events last year and some this year. It is new technology and I think it will be the starting technology of the future. It will make things a whole different ball game.”

Has it actually been used or just tested at ADRl event Alan.

The way I read it the finish beam would still be triggered by the front wheels (at least for now), so a car with a shorter front-to-wheel length would have a shorter track.

Call me old fashioned but I like the ability for drivers to play games on starting line. I like that someone who is at a disadvantage can take the risk of going in deep to try and help their chances or that during mineshaft conditions they can go in super shallow to have a better shot at a National Record. Then again I am a fan of 1320ft and canopies on dragsters so what do I know?

yup...but I'm not sure they are too interested in fans like us anymore
