Could it be that a single car team may have an advantage over a multi-car team. The multi-car teams are trying to use information from all their cars to come up with the best tune-up. With a single car team you are only concerned with your car and what it will do. A lot of information can be gained by a good crew chief just by watching the other cars run.
Also, with the multi-car teams sharing information one of the drawbacks is that no two cars are exactly the same or react exact the same.
