Happened to Michael Brotherton (I think) in Seattle. About '92. Wadded the car up on the starting line during Saturday qualifying..., somehow got it flipped on its side where it slowly pirouetted around its rear wheel. Loaded the bent car on a flatbed and hauled it to Hadman's shop. Brought it back on Sunday and won the race.

Might not have all the details correct...

At the 1993 IHRA Epping race, Doug Herbert blew a tire and ground the bottom frame rails off the car. They stripped it, loaded it onto a flatbed and went to Marc Rowes shop in Seabrook. Sunday morning showed back up with a fresh backhalf, rebuilt the car and lost 1st round....

Yup, 1992 with Coors Light sponsorship...

pretty sure they went to brainerd with a new chassis. i can remember bringing a newbie and sitting in bleachers
on thursday i think watching alcohol cars (they ran on thurs. back then) and seeing tall wing of TF car in staging lanes. it was
brotherton coming out to make half track pass to check out new car......by buddy was instantly hooked.

seem to remember late 80's / early 90's at bir too; eddie, fuzzy, crew, a forklift (or tractor?), wood blocking, and a few chains making sum adjustments to frame rails behind driver.

If we're going IHRA, also in 1993 at Bristol Doug Foxworth was in a crash with John Carey in Saturday night qualifying. They rebuilt the car and in round 1 on Sunday he suffered a huge blowover.

That was a brutal crash and I'm glad he walked away unscathed. One heck of an effort by the team to get the backup ready for the next round.

It was moderate crash wise, I’ve seen some of the bad ones, but because of all those bad ones and the new safety equipment and technology has paid big dividends!
Glad to see Steve walk away from the tire blowout.
They way he got out of the car and raised his arms reminds me of Raymond Beadles crash in the Blue Max Funny Car.

What good was any of this? Steve lost points in the semis with that oil down, or should have. That's something they have to think about, win and gain 20 points or blowup and lose and lose 5,10 or more points with the oildowns. He should have just stopped at the 2nd round win.

A championship caliber team does not fight all season to get to the position they are in then just throw in the towel when they have the ability to pull off a monumental effort and compete in a round in the most important part of the season. A 3.72 and good light will win you a lot of races. "Sitting it out" is not what these guys are made of.

It’s the difference between playing it safe and doing whatever it takes to try and get another 20 points.

Why should they have stopped? How are they supposed to know that there's going to be a parts failure?

"They don't take away points for oil downs during the Countdown."

Those rules have changed so much it is hard to keep up. One year, they fine them, the next they don't to help racers' budgets, the next year they fine them.

"How are they supposed to know that there's going to be a parts failure?"

An overnight thrash is hard enough, many have not produced after it. But an hour complete rebuild? Never tried before and a safety risk.

The no points deduction oil down rule during the countdown has been in effect for at least 3 years. Remember, they were not rebuilding a wrecked car, they were assembling using all pretty much all fresh parts with what looked like ar least 10 very experienced crew people who have put em together before. Makes a big difference.

If we're going that far out on the limb, it's a safety risk just getting into a racecar with a 10k horsepower engine that covers 1000' in under 4 seconds and you're just kidding yourself if you think otherwise. There's nothing safe about it. That's exactly what makes it what it is. Exciting. Outrageous. Over the top.

That camshaft was going to break no matter what the circumstances were.
